Devil May Cry 5 has now sold over 10 million units, six years after its original release on the PS4 in 2009.
This is a particularly significant milestone because the title was previously at 9.1 million units as of 31st March, meaning it’s tagged on another 900k units over the past three months. Fascinatingly, this total doesn’t appear to include the PS5 port Devil May Cry 5: Special Edition, which has also sold over one million units separately.
The game’s enjoyed a long sales tail thanks to clever price promotions and the release of the recent Netflix anime, which caused the game to chart again on storefronts like the PS Store.
“As a result of the game’s exhilarating action, and due to efforts to enhance brand awareness by leveraging the title beyond the scope of videogames, including television adaptations, the title has now exceeded 10 million units in cumulative sales worldwide,” the company said in a statement.
Interestingly, this week Sony said it’ll also be looking to leverage the power of anime to help promote some of its brands as well. Clearly this is a strategy that works with the right approach.

And unfortunately still no sequel to 2013/15's DMC Devil May Cry - still the best game in the series in my opinion by a fairly long way (though 3 and 4 were good).
Good game mediocre anime I preferred the original anime they did 2 decades ago
I believe this is the absolute best game in the hack n’ slash genre. Seriously a 10/10.
there is a small error it's not 2009 it's 2019 but damn 6 years already?! man we need a new game for DMC
Damn, Capcom ain’t slowing down for nobody! With so many great games already released, and amazing upcoming games like RE9, Onimusha, Pragmata and Okami 2, they’re the real VIP of this gen
@Rich33 "DMC Devil May Cry - still the best game in the series"
I'm happy you had a special connection with the game but that's never coming back, it was a one and done spin off made when Capcom was just out sourcing everything to the west.
Ninja Theory also barely makes games anymore, they are more interested in making interactive movies where you walk allot. As for the best DMC game if you go by the community it's a toss up between 3 & 5 🙂
@Rich33 just wanted to say that I, too, consider it the best game in the series. But it's true. Not many of us feel this way.
On topic: I greatly enjoyed Devil May Cry 5. It was good fun, so I'm glad to see it's done well.
It would be nice to do a Switch 2 edition.
Still waiting for them to de-censor the EU version.
I still remember getting my PS4 in 2009. DMC 5 came out nearly 20 years ago, and yet it looks better than 99% of AAA games that release today.
Love this series, played all games. DMC5 was sooo goood!!!
I'm probably the only few people who enjoyed DMC netflix. The DMC anime by Madhouse still better though and it's canon too.
Anyway. I bought this game on day 1 and never regret it. So congrats to Capcom and also Itsuno for left behind a masterpiece 👏
I hope Capcom has someone good enough to continue DMC series. But if they think the series end with DMC 5 then i'm okay with that...
I've just bought DMC for less than £9 on the psn. Looking forward to playing that. There's something about 5 that I can't get into it. I must push past it.
@Questionable_Duck It didn't come out 20 years ago, it came out 6 years ago. The date in the article is incorrect.
"six years after its original release on the PS4 in 2009."
It's a typo.
The release date was March 8, 2019, with Special edition being 10/12 November 2020 as a current gen launch game.
@Rich33 A person of taste, I see, I enjoyed DmC immensely myself as well (also tried DMC3 and DMC4 and they didn't leave as much of an impression on me). I like cheering for the underdogs, Dark Souls 2 was also a game I enjoyed way more than the other people.
In other words...Capcom can't stop winning.
@Lowdefal I know, I was joking lol
Release on ps4in 2009.😃.ps4 wasn't around then.devil may cry is a awesome game. Word up son
@Questionable_Duck
Hahahah
I wanna chime in as well, i too loved DMC!! 🥳
But, i might like DmC 5 a bit more. DMC was a banger though (in my book).
@extragood @naruball
Yeah, and it wasn't just 1 thing about DMC - I really liked the characters better, the bosses, the combat, the style, the weapon movesets etc etc. I think it may be a bit like marmite though - you either loved it or hated it lol.
I wasn't a huge fan of 1, never played 2, and thought 3 and 4 were good, but not amazing.
5 is an odd one - I would have probably thought it pretty good, had I not played DMC. After DMC, it just didn't click with me. Not unenjoyable, just a bit underwhelming.
@Juanalf
I dunno, Im still hoping Capcom see the love that DMC had and try a sequel. They may want to put the mainline DmC games on hiatus for a while, in which case a DMC sequel makes sense, or they could run both in parallel.
Deserved! Great ***** game!
@Rich33 DMC was really solid, but it's not coming back. Most gamers are too allergic to change as to have anything challenge their expectations.
On the other hand, I did appreciate dmcV as well as also the netflix anime, both about on the same level of cool as Bart Simpson 😂🤦
@tameshiyaku
As I replied to someone else, (though you may well be right) theres no reason for them not to do sequels to both DMC and dmc5, particularly if they have hit a bit of a roadblock as to where to take the mainline series next.
If they announce they are working on dmc6 as they release DMC2 they may well encourage people to give it a try.
@Rich33 it would be really cool. I'll keep my fingers crossed!
The best character action game and its not even close.
Probably the best and most versatile combat in any game... ever!?
Great news. One of the games I love enough that I double dipped getting the original on PS4 and then a physical copy of Special Edition on PS5. Would be awesome to get a DMC 6 soon, just hope it doesn't take any cues from that horrendous anime.
@Drago201 The "Anime" was so bad and treated Dante and Lady's character like absolute trash.
I hate the Netflix anime that s...was awful
And about the sales well they can't stop winning SE takes some notes
@Rich33 I liked DMC too but I think that's considered a controversial opinion. I don't care. I like what I like even if it's not universally loved
@rusty82
A good way of thinking about things.
And I bet if there hadn't been such an outpouring of negativity surrounding it, more would have tried and enjoyed it too (plus you will always find those that did enjoy it but say they don't to fit in with the 'cool' crowd- aka sheeple).
But it's only a 'controversial' opinion to those that really didn't like it - not to those of us who genuinely did!
Ive also seen it noted as 'controversial' before too - but it's just a game, that hurt no one (apart from maybe increasing the average swear words per sentence in video games, and that was just part of its charm lol).
@Rich33 I played it on PS3 and loved it enough that got it on PS4 too.
Life's too short to deny yourself stuff you like or to try and like what you don't enjoy.
If people didn't jump on bandwagons some games would sell better and others would lose sales as it can benefit some average games if the hype gets behind
@rusty82
Same here - except it was Xbox360 then PS4.
And I quite agree.
