Konami has confirmed its imminent Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater remake will indeed feature an online mode, but it's not the return of Metal Gear Online many were thinking. Instead, the PS5 release will have an entirely new multiplayer mode called Fox Hunt.
Still very much an online multiplayer mode, Fox Hunt is designed around the camouflage feature of Snake Eater and how it fits into a game of hide and seek in the online space. It sounds like you'll be sneaking around and attempting to silently take down other players.
Konami then says: "Unfortunately, we are not yet able to explain the specifics of the game this time, but we are working on Fox Hunt diligently. We hope to have more specific information about the game as it develops." This may suggest the mode won't be there at launch, which is at the end of August 2025.
Alongside the Fox Hunt mode, bonus Ape Escape offering Snake vs. Monkey was shown off some more alongside the Bomberman variant, which will only be in the Xbox Series X|S versions. Are you interested in Fox Hunt? Let us know in the comments below.

I wasn't a fan of MGS 3 when it first released anyway so the remake was quite a hard sell for me, now it has multiplayer it's a no brainer to give it a miss.
@Waa-Laa This is an odd comment. An optional online mode means you now will be missing it? Would you not play RDR2 because it has an optional online side mode?
@Waa-Laa MGS3 always had multiplayer so this is a confusing take? 🤔 If it wasn't for you then, why would you bother with it now anyways?
Edit: Makes sense now, as a trophy hunter the PS2 must not have held any appeal to you at all.
It is sad the original MGO won't be returning, so they definitely have their work cut out for them making Fox Hunt as appealing. Hopefully they learned from the trainwreck of a multiplayer mode in MGSV...
@BiosNova it's from a trophy stand point, I know I'm going to get hate for this but I skipped RDR 2 entirely because of the online element. I'll probably skip GTA VI too 🤷🏼♂️
@Waa-Laa I kinda get it, but whos to say if this will even have online trophies? I understand this point of view, but you're not even logical about it.
I LOVED the multiplayer for MGS4, some of the game modes they had were so much fun to play.
@Waa-Laa What did you do when Ghost of Tsushima added its online Legends mode, then, which had Trophies? Skipping whole games because of online Trophies doesn't make sense.
@Oram77 MGO2 was great. Hella janky (this was online gaming by a Japanese company in 2008, of course it was going to be jank) but so much fun.
@LiamCroft no, I was caught off guard with that game so I had to endure some hard-to-organise boosting sessions. Any multiplayer beyond co-op is my absolute worst nightmare, I'm sorry if people can't relate or understand. (By co-op I mean games like borderlands, that's perfectly executed in my opinion).
I'm still in a lobby....Snake Eater
"A cornered fox is more dangerous than a jackal!"
This sounds so PS3 era.
@Waa-Laa God bless, but this in no way to live :'-(
I have zero interest in the multplayer mode cant wait for the single player mode though but that's just me other people will play it and like multilayer games
I can't deny I'm a bit gutted it's not actually MGO proper. However I'm still willing to give to give the new mode a shot. I'm just not sure why they wouldn't just add this mode to the already existing MGO modes.
Odd but I'm still intrigued anyway.
@Waa-Laa I kinda get where your're coming from - it's a form of addiction - I had it during the Xbox 360 days (and most of the PS4 gen, too) where I was obsessively hunting achievements/trophies, but ultimately it left me completely hollow.
Looking back on it I wasted so much time chasing them, and on most occasions I ended up despising a lot of games because the lingering memory of them wasn't fun, it was the chore of mopping up trophies, and it soured the experience.
I've since learned to let go - turned off trophy pop ups - and I'm enjoying games SO much more now
@JB_Whiting maybe you're right. Games I want but don't fancy the trophy hunt I get the Switch version if there is one.
@JB_Whiting "and on most occasions I ended up despising a lot of games"
100% agree with this, I got the platinum for FF7 Rebirth (my persoal GOTY last year) But those VR fights made me to hate the game at one point 😂
It's funny, I never played MGS3's Online but I do remember playing MGS4's Online. It was unique but fun to play.
@Waa-Laa I understand where you are coming from, nothing worst multiplayer-related trophies stopping you getting a Platinum (if you are aiming for). Most games these days would separate the single player and multiplayer portion of their trophies, but best to check if it is the case for Delta.
This is gonna be an unpopular opinion so buckle up? Maybe?
I think this is a very lazy remake, wrongfully labelled as "Loyal". MGS3 is a masterpiece. But it's not timeless. The thing with the old MGS games is that, if you play the original you'll have fun. But bring that to the modern day, judge it the same way you judge today's games and what you have is, at best, a lackluster cesspit of really old level design. It simply does not hold up. And from what I see in the trailers, it looks like this remake keeps the level design, and even enemy placements(!) the same as the original. Which is nuts, if you think about it.
Now, how does all this connect to Fox Hunt? I'll tell you.
Konami wanted to try their hand at a new live-service/online game (because the industry's making bucks out of that rn?). But Konami has a terrible history (Metal Gear Survive). So nobody was going to buy their new multiplayer Metal Gear game. So what they did was try and be smart. Make a lazy remake, shiny graphics, some new gameplay elements and market it as a loyal remake because the fans love Kojima and his vision remaining untouched is great news. And then, when everybody's waiting for the remake, you slap on your new online game onto it.
Folks, we're not buying a MGS3 Remake. We're buying Konami's new lab rat called Fox Hunt with an added over-glorified remastered MGS3.
Its good enough for me 👍
That sounds fricken awesome. Give the Grozni Grad map again and we're all set. I mainly played MGO as a stealth game anyways so this is music to my ears.
Disappointing... Why wouldn't they add mgo with this new fox mode?
Rgt 85 is a happy middle-aged man 👨 😄
Hope we eventually get a true Metal Gear Solid sequel from Konami just to spite Kojima. XD
Sounds like a good time!
Metal Squid online
@Waa-Laa I Get where you're coming from, I used to actively avoid multiplayer trophies and missed out on experiencing lot of great games, but once I got my 100th Plat with Astro Bot, I decided that was enough and now I'm giving all games a try without worrying about the trophies and loving every second of it. If anything, now I'm actively avoiding getting platinums because 100 is such a nice round number 😄
@Lami what a nice reply, thank you 😊
I understand what you're saying, I really do but it's a condition I've had since creating this account! Maybe one day I'll learn to let go.....
