The Daily Grind: How much money would you pay to keep a beloved MMORPG online?

Back in April, Wild Terra 2 studio Juvty Worlds did something fairly unusual in the MMORPG world, at least outside of rogue servers and fan-licensed titles: It told players how much additional money it needed every month to keep the servers going. The studio, which apparently employs just four people, admitted that it needs another $1800 a month to keep the servers for the buy-to-play MMO rented and running.

As we noted, that’s not really a lot of money; City of Heroes Homecoming usually pulls in (and spends) over $5000 a month to keep its multiple servers going, though of course it has many more people playing than the few hundred who seem to play Wild Terra 2 on average. Still, you have to appreciate the honesty; if I played this game, I’d be more likely to donate if I had trust in the devs, and this helps.

Pretend for a sec that we’re talking about an MMORPG that you play and love (statistically unlikely to be WT2): How much money would you pay to keep a beloved MMORPG online?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
