Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, which debuted on PS5 earlier this month, is off to an impressive start on Sony’s system.
According to an in-depth report by data analyst firm Alinea Analytics, the title has already sold over 100k copies on PlayStation, and is outperforming its Steam counterpart launch aligned.
While the firm doesn’t reveal its exact methodology, it does tout it as the “most accurate on the market”. We’ll contact the company to try and get a little more insight into how it’s compiling its numbers.
For now, though, the source says that MachineGames’ latest is selling faster on PS5 than it did on Xbox Series X|S and PC. It notes this is particularly impressive when you consider it’s launching late on Sony’s platform, after the initial marketing cycle has ended.
Alinea Analytics’ data shows that less people plumped up for Early Access on the four-month-old game, which makes sense, but since the PS5 version’s full official launch date it’s outperformed its Steam counterpart comfortably launch aligned.
The report also claims that the PS5 version is selling faster than its Xbox alternative, but this is where things get a little wishy-washy because the release’s inclusion on Game Pass muddies the waters somewhat.
It states that a little under five million Xbox players have tried out the Indy adventure, but the “vast majority” of these were obtained via the subscription. It then adds that Game Pass ultimately “cannibalises” premium game sales, and editorialises that this bet isn’t paying off for the firm.
It’s an interesting report that also digs into the potential crossover between those who purchased Indiana Jones on PS5 and have played other action adventure games, like Uncharted and Tomb Raider. (As you’d expect, it’s high.)
But without knowing the underlying methodology behind all of the data, it’s hard to read too much into it for now. What’s clear is that Indiana Jones PS5 is, at the very least, seemingly off to a strong start.

100,000 doesn’t seem like a lot. I would’ve most likely bought it day one when it initially launched, but the timed exclusivity made we willing to wait a bit longer until it’s on sale.
I wonder what the sales would have been without the timed exclusivity.
This is why MS can't afford to exclude the PS playerbase. Maybe if Gamepass weren't a thing it would be different but as it is they need those PS sales.
I plumped for the early access full beans version as it just fitted with my days off better and it was worth every penny.
I'd love to know the actual number on Xbox who paid for it.
Don't know what it is about this game - it holds some minor interest for me, but nowhere near enough to buy it. Maybe if it goes on deep sale.
As others have said, keeping this as a timed exclusive might have really hurt sales on PS, which is easily where the large majority of potential console game purchases is. Did that help them sell additional Xbox consoles or GP subs - probably not at this stage.
@DennisReynolds I agree that now MS does need multi format versions of its games but I think they would still need to if gamepass didn't exist.
I think if MS didn't have gamepass the gap between PS5 and Series X and S sales would be wider as gamepass is a big selling point. Some people buy Xboxes and don't buy any games for it outside of gamepass as they don't need to.
Without gamepass I think MS would have had to go multi format as they would be even worse off.
I imagine Indy may have had a high attach rate without gamepass, same for Halo infinite etc.
@Anke All 5 million of the Xbox players paid for it. The question is how many bought the game outright.
Chances are it's a few hundred K and then the remaining ~4.5 Million played on Gamepass, but what I'd be genuinely curious to know is how many Gamepass players got the Early access/DLC upgrade as I imagine that will have been alot higher than on PS5.
100k doesn’t sound massively impressive in all honesty.
The game’s decent but for a character like Indy I think I’d have preferred 3rd person.
Probably because not many people wanna shell out for a series X to play this one game that at one point was exclusive and now it's not. People were already rolling with PS5 and now they can play this game without giving a rats ass about a system they didn't want in the first place.
Face it. As far as exclusives what have they got on xbox to bogart except maybe Halo and gears of war? Microsoft needs to stick to PC gaming and leave the consoles to Sony and Nintendo. Been saying this for years. Three home systems aren't necessary. If you love Microsoft so much and are super hard core into graphics and power why are you playing on consoles anyway? Stick to that PC master race.
Brilliant game, one of the best in recent years.
@Dodoo You switch to third person for climbing and cinematics often enough that you still see Indy often enough. But first person is important for the type of game they have made. The whole level design is a twisty maze that first person helps to navigate and find all the items. I think you feel more like you are ARE Indy this way.
Dont all games sell better on PS than any other platform
@Truegamer79 Judging by what I got this generation of software on PlayStation PS5 is just selling on name alone when Ghost of Yotai which I have no interest in is something to get excited about you know it's barren.
@Blackbluto I agree with you to an extent, it's not been a stellar generation. Although personally for me, even if 10 great games came out every year, Ghost of Yotei would still be one of my most anticipated games, along with Death stranding 2
Seeing as the ps5 user base vastly outweighs Xbox this isn’t surprising. And it’s actually selling rather than being given away as part of gamepass where they call it “engagement”. Ps sales will fund gamepass titles.
@Anke
Probably 4 people, 5 if I'm being generous. 🤭
Gamepass lol
100k outpacing both Steam and Xbox is absolutely tragic.
Xbox software sales have been absolutely abysmal since they started pushing Gamepass hard. I highly doubt these kinds of sales numbers are sustainable, and this one did considerably better than games like Forza Motorsport, Hellblade 2, South of Midnight etc.

Of course its selling 'faster' on Playstation because on Playstation, Gamers have NO choice but to 'buy' it to play. However, on both Xbox and PC, Gamers also have the option of Game Pass which will affect 'Sales'. Those who Subscribe are less likely to buy - especially at/around launch when its at its most expensive.
They don't 'need' to sell when they have £300m+ coming in 'every' month from Subscribers but of course with 100m+ on Sony's platform, that's a sizeable market to try and get extra revenue from and maximise profits...
We as Playstation gamers are now funding Xbox developers
@BAMozzy
It's $300m a month roughly, and that's less than PS Plus makes(more than $1b a quarter) . So do Sony games not need to sell a single copy to be OK? If Concord had just been put on PS Plus day one then it's sales performances would have magically been irrelavent.
@themightyant true I appreciated they at least gave 3rd person views for some cinematics and first person can be better for immersion.
Don’t get me wrong they did a great job overall, it’s a solid game. Just my preference would be different that’s all.

@ChrisDeku £300m is different from $300m and actually £300m is what I consider a very conservative estimate based on 30m paying £10 a month - yet over 35m are subscribed with most paying more for 'Ultimate' - the most expensive option but the one that gets you 'Day 1' games on Console, its likely to be closer to £400m a month - that's £'s not $'s.
With £300m coming in every month, they can pay their Studios and all their development costs. Most games are built over years so the 'cost' to develop is spread out over that time. If a game costs £180m to make over 5 years, that's £36m a year or £3m a month - so £300m income a month can keep up to 100 studios making games for Game Pass - but that doesn't count for 3rd Party published games which they also need to 'pay' for.
So technically they don't 'need' to sell because Game Pass revenue can offset the 'cost' to make those games in the first place. Of course they do 'sell' to maximise their IP's profit margins and grow their business. Sales may be pure 'profit'.
Sony probably could have put Concord and Marathon on PS+ too - but Sony are very much a 'Sales' based company and have a different 'belief' over their own products. They believe their product, whether its Hardware (Consoles, TV's etc) or their Games, they consider them 'Premium' and 'better' than ANY other and as such, customers should expect a 'Premium' price tag - PS5 £10 tax because it 'looks' better than the PS4 version despite it being exactly the same Game, story etc. Tv's that cost more than Samsung/LG with 'worse' specs overall - Sony 'think' their Premium so will charge for their games even if they should be F2P - It goes against Sony's own Status and business model.
That's why they will charge a 'premium' for what should be F2P as they believe their games are 'premium' compared to all the F2P options. Sony have always been 'Sales' based - MS have been more Service based in general and that is perhaps the biggest difference in why MS will forego maximum Profit margins (Day 1 sales when the game is most expensive) in favour of Sub fees...
@PlatinumMikey Seeing as Microsoft are pushing towards being a multiformat publisher, that's a good thing. Or would you rather they tap out of the videogame market and take a wealth of beloved IP with them?
None of these companies are your friends, nor are they spending tens to hundreds of millions to develop games for the LOLs. The market being healthy mutually benefits the big companies and the consumers.
@BAMozzy gamepass makes just under $1b a quarter, you don't need to estimate, that's an official quote from MS during one of their financial releases. They've never updated since then to state it's over $1b a quarter, and as soon as it is they'll likely announce it to investors, however the sub market has stagnated for 2 years.
Everything you said about sales vs services is irrelavent because Sony make more money from services and they overall have less studios and pay less upkeep costs to matain their studio portfolio and they do not kneecap their own software sales. I just don't understand how xbox can make any profit under these conditions. Games like Indiana selling 100k at launch is ludicrous and not sustainable.
@MrPeanutbutterz no I’d rather they fund they’re development teams themselves rather than trying to turn the industry into Netflix
Very disappointed with this game. Looked great on PS5 Pro but for me the game play was terrible, bit of a mess to be honest. I tried to enjoy it but it was to Slow and boring. 4/10
@MrPeanutbutterz if you think gamepass will make the market healthy you need to give your head a wobble pal. There’s a big reason they are now releasing the games on PS. Devs need paying for the work or they go out of business
@PlatinumMikey They're billion dollar corporations, they didn't get there by not doing stuff for profit. If their (Xbox's) model isn't profitable enough - which it clearly isn't - then they'll seek to expand their market and models by pivoting. In this case, pushing towards multiformat publishing on PS5/Switch(2) is the pivot.
And I'm staunchly anti-GamePass, and subscriptions in general. By "healthy market" I mean Sony/Nintendo/Microsoft have a captive audience that actually want to buy their games. Microsoft are finding that audience outside of their own ecosystem.
@MrPeanutbutterz Xbox/PS and ninty might be billion dollar corps but not all the devs are mate
I would have bought this in a second, had they put the consumer first and actually put the full base game on the disc (or minted two, if that’s what it takes). Since they didn’t, I didn’t waste the money on this false grail.
They chose…poorly.
@Rog-X 1 extra platform micro are releasing there’s on all. for a reason lol gamepass is unsustainable
@PlatinumMikey Okay, and? It has nothing to do with what's being discussed (Microsoft first party games going multiformat to keep their portfolio of franchises financially viable).
Besides, why do you think the majority of games developers even exist? Hint - it's money.
@Balaam_ You don't need to tell us you don't like digital on every article. We know.
@MrPeanutbutterz it’s because gamepass is unsustainable. PS didn’t follow for two reasons they know that ⬆️ and also they can actually shift games on the platform
@PlatinumMikey Please re-read where I said I'm strongly anti-GamePass - you're preaching to the choir here.
@MrPeanutbutterz I know I’m just reiterating my point lol. I’ll let you have fhe last word I’m bored now
It looks like fun, but I'm definitely not paying full price for it. Especially since I could pay for Game Pass and play it on my Series X along with hundreds of other games. I'll wait for a sale and pick up a physical copy for PS5 and play it on my Pro later this year.
I wonder if the deals to put Indiana Jones, Clair Obscure and Oblivion on PS Plus has already been made or will be done when sales taper off.
Like how far ahead in time are games booked in to the service? Maybe later than I think, compared to Game Pass which seems to be pretty early in a games' development to sort of hedge the developer's bets or because they belong to a poor trillion dollar company.
@Rog-X I think that's the truth even though Microsoft won't admit it gamepass is ridiculously amazing to good to be honest that's why they must be losing money there
Man, why are there so many childish comments in this thread. People need to put the console wars behind them.
@Rog-X I know. I'll wait for it to drop down to $20 and pick up a copy then. I'd still rather have the disc instead of the Digital version. At least I could sell it or loan it to family/friend if i no longer want it...
Remember when 3 million copies in 3 days was a flop for FF16.
100,000 copies in week for Indy seems really bad. Which means the xbox and PC sold terribly for a hyped game!
Millions of "Engaged players" on gamepass isnt going to move any needle!
@Dodoo I agree! Don’t understand why such an iconic character like Indy should be relegated to just being a hand on the screen. Seems like a missed opportunity.
I’ve not played the game but I’m told there are mechanics in there that couldn’t be done in 3rd person. Then again, I was told the same about Elder Scrolls games and I play those games exclusively in 3rd person.
@GADG3Tx87 ok.
@AhmadSumadi exactly, he’s so iconic he should be seen! I think the devs realised that hence why they at least show him in gameplay cinematics…
I played it just passed the Vatican level (no idea how far that is into the game) and don’t think I saw anything up to that point that couldn’t have been done in 3rd person.
Anyway I have to get back to a game that poops all over Indy in my opinion, CO: Expedition 33!
I have a friend who enjoys it. I tried it on GamePass and, while it may sound strange, it didn’t feel like Indiana Jones. At least to me. Too much sneaking around bopping Fascists in the back of the head with a wrench. I didn’t expect a Raiders game to stress stealth so much.
Don't forget gamepass doesn't harm game sales and people with gamepass buy more games than those without it......apparently not.
Gamepass subscribers across PC and Xbox combined is at what? 30 million? There's double that amount of players remaining across both those systems who don't have gamepass and buy new games so gamepass is no excuse for poor sales.
Its safe to say this game flopped hard, people were critical of FF16s 3 million in 3 days and AC Shadows 3 million in less than a month, but this game has achieved 100k in one day.
Clair Obscur 33, a niche RPG game from an unknown indie studio, sold 500k copy in 1 day. So MS/Xbox with a mega IP like Indiana Jones selling just 100k, it's sounds like a flop.
On the wishlist! Will wait a year or so
@Rog-X Sony releases games on non-rival platform PC for extra revenue after sales on PS5 are mostly exhausted.
MS has to release games on rival platform PS5 as core revenue to try and keep GP sustainable.
Big difference.
@whatkindofsick it keeps games coming on gamepass day one I don't think any xbox players really care about the finace bit.
@InvaderJim oh they don't. My reply was to the false equivalence earlier
So you are saying that PlayStation gamers will make sure that Game Pass will stay great with day one releases of first-party games? Sounds pretty good to me tbh.
