Let’s Figure Out Dark Souls II: Scholar Of The First Sin’s Confusing PC Pricing

by Mike Futter on Mar 31, 2015 at 06:56 AM

If you’re looking forward to diving back into Dark Souls II on PC with the upcoming Scholar of the First Sin edition, get out your calculator. The pricing depends on what you already own on PC and which DirectX version you’ll be using.

If you can run games using DirectX11, you’ll be paying one of three price points. If you’re coming in fresh, Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin (DX11) will cost you $49.99.

If you already own Dark Souls II on PC, your upgrade cost is $29.99. If you’re a die-hard and own the DLC also, your price is $19.99.

But let’s say you can’t run DirectX11. If you’re coming in fresh with Scholar of the First Sin (DX9), you’ll be paying $39.99. If you already own Dark Souls II you’ll be paying nothing for the DX9 version. In fact, your game has already been updated.

The differences in the DX11, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4 versions of the game are many. Enemy spawn points are relocated, items are in different places, and there are a number of environmental changes. All of this means that you can’t interact across generations or between the two DirectX versions.

Note that there will be two different Steam pages for the DX11 and DX9 versions. Before you make a purchase, make sure you’re on the correct store page. For more, check out our review of the original release of Dark Souls II.

Our Take
This is pretty confusing, but if you consider the DX9 version a completely different product than the DX11 game, it helps. Think of them as the difference between last-generation consoles and current-generation. The content is similar, but the two games are running on different architecture.
