As a live game, Fortnite will constantly evolve over time. However, the latest update has brought a change that many Fortnite players have found shocking and are in disbelief.
Update v29.20 has introduced new Mythic items, the Avatar collaboration, and Rocket Racing Season 1, among other things. You can check out the Fortnite patch notes to find out all the details.
Yet, there has been one change that has received backlash from the community more than any other aspect. Which side are you on? Read on and decide for yourself.
Shocking change splits the Fortnite community
Some might be planning how to best use the new Mythic items coming in Battle Royale or getting an early start on the Rocket Racing Season. However, others in the community have focussed on a different change happening in Fortnite. There has been plenty of poor feedback on socials regarding a change that many might not even think twice about.
The change which has caused a stir is an adjustment to the Fortnite Shop and Locker. There will no longer be item rarity tiers for cosmetics. These used to mirror the Battle Royale system of Uncommon (Green), Rare (Blue), Epic (Purple), and Legendary (Gold). As announced on the official Fortnite news page:
“The Shop has evolved significantly to support multiple types of cosmetics and items across games, so we’re retiring the old Battle Royale-inspired system of colors and tags for cosmetic quality. Different Series of cosmetics — such as the Icon Series or Gaming Legends Series — will still be there to help you find your favorite stuff!”
The backlash to this change is split into two main camps. One can be summed up in a post by @leezi_lashluxe, who said “Another terrible change to the locker. These are the things that make me miss old Fortnite…” This side of the argument consists of the player base that wants Epic Games to bring back the old locker UI. It is also the weaker camp of the two, with the community saying these players need to stop being so sentimental about previous iterations in the game.
However, the second camp believes Epic Games has something more sinister planned. “This is just so they can market newer skins at higher prices since they’ll have no rarity”, suggests @toopmeister.
Previously, Uncommon skins were the cheapest and would cost 800 V-Bucks, with Legendary ones setting you back 2,000 V-Bucks. Yet, with the rarity removed, fans are worried that Epic Games will start overcharging for skins that would previously have been cheap.
We will have to see how the situation plays out, but it is a fair worry to have. Only time will tell what Epic has planned for the pricing structure in the future.
