Overwatch 2 has been no stranger to player backlash recently and with the recent announcement of Overwatch 2: Invasion set to launch on August 10 fan reaction has not changed. Blizzard was subject to a slew of angry fans following the announcement on social media with players particularly frustrated at the Overwatch team’s decision to keep the permanent unlock of Overwatch 2: Invasion Story Missions behind a $15 USD paywall.

While the Overwatch 2: Invasion Bundle includes additional content outside of the permanent access to Story Missions, many players have taken to social media to air their frustrations with the seemingly money-driven decision. The full Overwatch 2: Invasion Bundle includes the following:

  • Permanent access to the Overwatch 2: Invasion Story Missions
  • 1,000 Overwatch Coins (equal to the Premium Battle Pass, $10 USD value)
  • A brand-new Sojourn Legendary skin ($19 USD value)
  • Permanent access to Sojourn as a playable hero for new players: unlocked upon completing Story Mission challenges.

Twitter user Skymin quoted Blizzard’s announcement outraged and baffled by the decision saying, “Permanent? PERMANENT?! I HAVE TO PAY 15 BUCKS IF I WANT TO BE ABLE TO ACCESS YOUR GUTTED PVE MODE AFTER SEASON 6?! WHAT’S TO STOP THEM FROM SAYIN ‘THIS ARC IS OVER, NOW ITS OVERWATCH: INCURSION, GIVE US 15 MORE BUCKAROOS.'” Replying to Skymin’s post user DualClassic noted, “I paid 40$ for OW1 only to have it be forcefully replaced by a worse version of itself. And now they’re asking for more just to access the content they promised me for free a year ago Yeah, no thanks.”

While a subsequent post from the Overwatch Twitter account advertising the upcoming content has received a more mixed reception the original announcement still has an overwhelmingly negative reception with almost all of the comments outraged at the Overwatch team’s decision.

This announcement is the latest controversy surrounding Overwatch 2 since Blizzard announced the cancellation of the game’s Hero Mode. If you’re still looking forward to jumping into Overwatch 2 Season 5 ahead of its launch this evening why not check out Overwatch 2 Season 5 release date, new map, Summer Games events and more?
