Just like that, Hot Wheels Unleashed 2: Turbocharged has been announced by Milestone. Considering the original was the studio's best-selling game ever, we suppose a sequel was inevitable — and here it is. The debut trailer is CG, but it teases a number of interesting new twists to the formula.

Based on the collectible toy cars of the same name, this arcade racing game traditionally keeps tracks locked to those signature plastic orange roads. While you diverted a little bit in the first game, it looks like this will be a larger focus this time, with the trailer including a large portion of driving outside in the open.

According to the official website, we'll be racing around various new locations, each of which will have differing terrain types, all of which will affect the handling of your car. Some of these new environments include the backyard from the trailer, an arcade, and a gas station.

We're also introduced to motorbikes, monster trucks, and other vehicles joining the fun, and some new mechanics show up here; jumps and sideswipes look to up the ante in terms of action.

The website also confirms the return of the campaign mode (with an all-new story), plus several new modes for the sequel: Grab the Gears, Demo Derby, Drift Master, and Waypoints. Details are slim on those, though they're fairly self-explanatory. On top of all that, Turbocharged introduces a new skill system, which allows you to outfit your favourite vehicles with unique perks.

We really liked Hot Wheels Unleashed, and going by this announcement trailer and what we can see on the website, we should be in for a treat with the follow-up. Hopefully we get to see some gameplay soon. Fortunately, the sequel isn't too far away, launching on PS5 and PS4 on 19th October, 2023.
