One of the characters the player can meet in Hogwarts Legacy is Ominis Gaunt, the subject of a potential plot hole noticed by one hawk-eyed fan. Not only is Ominis a descendant of Salazar Slytherin, the founder of what is regarded as the evil house in Hogwarts Legacy and related media, he is also related to Tom Marvolo Riddle; the dark wizard otherwise known as Lord Voldemort.

Hogwarts Legacy takes place in the late 1800s, which is shortly before Voldemort was born in 1925. While the events of the game predate the atrocities committed by Voldemort and his Death Eaters, the House of Gaunt was a family of pure-blood wizards obsessed with their status as such. This obsession along with the family's belief in pure-blood supremacy over muggles led to the family to marry within itself in order to maintain its status, and this was a contributing factor in the family dying out; the last living members by 1925 were Voldemort's grandfather, his mother, and uncle.

Reddit user atzijeslavie made an interesting point by saying that Hogwarts Legacy character Ominis Gaunt should be "weirder" because of all the inbreeding that occurred within his family as they endeavored to maintain pure-blood status; indeed, his relatives Marvolo, Merope, and Morfin (Voldemort's grandfather, mother, and uncle respectively) were portrayed as mentally unstable and ugly as a result of this. Ominis, on the other hand, is relatively normal-looking, and, unlike some of his relatives, is able to show compassion and empathy. Ominis was even tortured for refusing to perform the Cruciatus Curse on Muggles, something his family did purely "for sport."

The Harry Potter book series, which is counted as the main source of canon, is pretty clear about the fate of the Gaunt family; as already mentioned, they had all but died out by the time Voldemort was born, so it is likely that Ominis had already died by then. Another more comforting yet speculative possibility that some commenters preferred is that Ominis was either disowned or chose to distance himself from the Gaunt family by taking another name. Yet another possibility is that fellow Hogwarts Legacy character Sebastian Sallow eventually killed him in an act of revenge.

While it is difficult to discern the fate of Ominis from currently available information, the character may be further explored in upcoming Hogwarts Legacy DLC. However, there is no official word about any further plans for Ominis.

Hogwarts Legacy is available now for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. It will be available for Nintendo Switch on November 14.
