Square Enix has often followed a familiar and largely successful blueprint when it comes to designing combat for each series installment and it seems that Final Fantasy 16 is no different. Although recent entries have mainly deviated from the iconic turn-based structure of yore, the live action-packed fights that the developers have now opted for have quickly become popular within the community due to their fast-paced nature.

With several action adventure RPGs having already been launched and the Final Fantasy 16 release date set to follow suit, it’s hard not to compare and contrast one from the other as there are only so many mechanics that can make each game different. For this reason, developers frequently end up taking inspiration from a variety of sources, which the developers seem to have done with FF16 as evidenced by the gameplay trailers that have been released so far.

Upon seeing the Final Fantasy 16 combat design, the first titles that naturally come to mind are a few mainstream ones such as Elden Ring and Devil May Cry. However, Square Enix apparently took inspiration from a source that’s completely separate from their own genre in Marvel vs. Capcom 2.

According to a recent GameInformer interview, FF16 combat director Ryota Suzuki said that “there’s actually something from Marvel vs. Capcom 2 that we took and put into Final Fantasy 16,” which was apparently “the Assist system where you could give orders to your partner in battle.” As seen throughout the many previews that have already been provided, Clive will have a handful of different companions throughout the story so this mechanic will likely play an instrumental part in the story.

With the game’s launch date only a few days away, you won’t have to settle for gameplay videos anymore because you’ll finally be able to experience FF16’s exciting combat firsthand soon. While you wait, though, check out our Final Fantasy 16 gameplay preview so you know what to expect once it gets released.
