PlayStation have just announced the Backbone One for Android, the next iteration of the original controller which is only compatible with iOS.

The controller accepts your phone as an insert in the middle, sandwiching it between the two halves of a controller much like you’d experience with a Nintendo Switch. It features a PlayStation themed design – defined by the off-white colour scheme synonymous with the PS5. Aside from that, it features the trademark PlayStation button stylings, ditching the previous ‘ABXY’ arrangement that the original has.

Alongside that, there’s a USB-C port connecting your phone to the controller, which is now compatible with PlayStation, Xbox, and Steam, which the original was not.

Aside from this – you won’t be experiencing much more than you would from the vanilla Backbone One, though the compatibility with the PlayStation Remote Play app gives it a sharp edge.

Costing $99, the same price as all other Backbone One controller editions, it’s going to be available from today – from the Backbone store – though we’d expect other retailers to pick up stock fairly soon.

Currently available in the US, Canada, Latin America, Europe, the Middle East, Australia and New Zealand, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Singapore will soon be seeing availability.
