World of Warcraft is opening the gate on the Warlock by finally allowing characters of every race to be one. While most of these new race and class combos are exciting, some World of Warcraft players have concerns about how much sense a few of them make.

In a recent blog post, World of Warcraft announced some of the features coming in Patch 10.1.5. In addition to a new mega-dungeon and a third Evoker specialization, WoW also revealed players would soon be able to play a Warlock of any race, and could customize their demon pets at the barber shop.

Players were excited about the option to play Warlocks of many of these races like the Zandalari Trolls, who canonically had the class in their history. Others, like the Mag’har, Draenei, and Lightforged Draenei, have players confused. The main difference between Mag’har and regular Orcs is that the latter were corrupted by the Fel magic Warlocks wield, and Draenei have opposed their demonic Eredar cousins from the Burning Legion in WoW for eons. Their Lightforged brethren are an even more pronounced example of this – World of Warcraft lore has even shown Light and Fel magic are like oil and water, indicating that being a Warlock should be impossible.

That said, adding these options rarely comes in a vacuum. Dragonflight has seen the Mage, Rogue, Warrior, Monk, and Priest classes opened up to all races. Shortly after, World of Warcraft implemented NPCs to explain the lore of many of these new options. Of them, the new Orc Priest lore was notable in that World of Warcraft fans helped shape it in more ways than one. However, doing so with the Warlock class may require a little work with some of these past combinations.

Many players hope World of Warcraft does this by introducing new customization options to help sell the Warlock idea. Options like green eyes for Night Elves or the Feltotem customizations from the Highmountain Tauren enemies could help players better live their class fantasy. For the Draenei, access to the Eredar customizations could explain the new class option, all while showing what their demonic cousins have been doing since the Legion’s fall and essentially introducing a new race into the game.

Nevertheless, Warlocks being opened to every race in World of Warcraft suggests the same will happen with every class in the near future. Players can almost certainly expect the Shaman, Paladin, and Druid classes to eventually expand to other races, though the unique assets from totems, divine steeds, and shapeshifting forms could slow the process. Only time will tell if the Dracthyr race or Evoker class will follow suit.

World of Warcraft is available now for PC.
