We knew when EA Sports acquired Super Mega Baseball developer Metalhead Studio there would likely be a sequel at some point, and it’s pitching up a 2nd June release date on PS5 and PS4. Now officially named EA Sports Super Mega Baseball 4, the long awaited fourth instalment in the arcade baseball series will see over 200 legends added to its roster, including the likes of Babe Ruth, Hank Aaron, and David Ortiz.

“It’s an incredible honour to be the first cover athlete for Super Mega Baseball and to be recognised as a baseball legend in the game alongside hundreds of other icons in our sport for the first time in the series,” said Hall of Famer David Ortiz. “Super Mega Baseball 4 is going to be an amazing and fun experience for fans that truly captures the humour and personality of baseball.”

It looks like EA Sports’ budget has been used to seriously up the presentation of this instalment, promising “authentic, cinematic baseball, powered by new cameras, cutscene animations, and lighting”. You can still expect the high-octane arcade-style gameplay from previous instalments, however – this is not suddenly going to compete with MLB The Show 23.

“Our team is really stoked to launch the newest chapter in the Super Mega Baseball series with the power of EA Sports behind us for the first time,” beamed studio director Scott Drader. “Whether you’re a longtime SMB player or a new fan looking to play and connect with friends around the love for the sport, Super Mega Baseball 4 has something for everyone. We can’t wait for fans to play when the game launches on 2nd June.”

Crossplay across PS5, PS4, and all other formats will be supported, and while the press release is a little light on gameplay details and modes, the publisher will have plenty of time to flesh out those details. Pre-orders are live now, with an expanded Ballpark Edition featuring three days early access and a trio of additional stadiums. And if you just want to try the title out completely free of commitment, a ten hour EA Play trial will be available from 30th May.
