A leak from the next major content update for World of Warcraft provided some clues that may confirm or reinforce some theories concerning the future of the night elves. The leak was shared on social media, leaving fans speculating as to what this leak could mean as World of Warcraft prepares to release Patch 10.1, Embers of Neltharion, in the coming days.

Following the burning of Teldrassil, which was regarded as one of the saddest moments in World of Warcraft, the night elves were without a home and swore vengeance upon Sylvanas Windrunner and the Horde. This quest for vengeance served as one of the focal points of Battle for Azeroth. In Shadowlands, the souls of the night elves that fell during the burning were wrongly sent to The Maw. But thanks to the efforts of the player character, some souls were redeemed and sent to Ardenweald. At the conclusion of Shadowlands, Malfurion Stormrage, Tyrande Whisperwind, and Ysera were gifted a new world tree seed by the Winter Queen, which was made from the night elf souls that were freed from The Maw. The seed was later planted within the Emerald Dream to safeguard it from harm. Soon, the efforts of this endeavor may bear fruit.

According to a leaked cinematic from World of Warcraft, the aforementioned seed may soon bloom into a tree that will spring forth from the Emerald Dream and into Azeroth as a "symbol of hope" for the night elves, and potentially a new home in the future. The leaked cinematic may lend credence to a theory that the location of the new world tree may be off the coast of the Ohn'aran Plains, where the Green Dragonflight has a presence. Given the intrinsic relationship that the night elves have with Ysera and the Emerald Dream, the location of a potential world tree may not come as a surprise.

Reaction to the leak was mixed on social media. Some players welcomed more lore about the night elves. However, other players saw the leak as nonsensical and insulting to longtime World of Warcraft players. Some even cited Ysera's sacrifice in Legion to further condemn Blizzard's storytelling and wondered why it would be planted anywhere but Kalimdor, which the night elves had called home for millennia.

Nevertheless, it is clear that Blizzard is not done with the story of the night elves. With World of Warcraft Patch 10.2 potentially taking place in the Emerald Dream, only time will tell what lies ahead for the night elves, and what moves their foes may make.
