When Hogwarts Legacy players finally make it to the titular school, they hurry along eager to learn their first spell. On their first day of school, players learn Levioso, a spell that is similar to Wingardium Leviosa, but with a slightly different name and effect. While this may have been confusing to players at first, Professor Garlick explains the difference between Levioso and Wingardium Leviosa later on in the game. Though this may be one of the first spells that Harry Potter learns, players will have to progress through the story quite a bit before it becomes available to them.

Learning spells in Hogwarts Legacy is usually done either by attending class, completing assignments, or learning them from friends like Sebastian Sallow. Wingardium Leviosa is taught as part of an assignment given to the player by Professor Garlick. She elaborates that Levioso, the spell players already know at this point, is used simply for levitating things directly into the air. Wingardium Leviosa is a more powerful version of the spell that is capable of lifting heavier objects and moving them around freely and with precision.

How to Complete Professor Garlick's Assignment 1 in Hogwarts Legacy

Professor Garlick's first assignment is made available to the player after they complete Sebastian's quest "In the Shadow of the Undercroft." She asks the player to complete the following tasks:

  • Acquire and use a Venomous Tentacula
  • Acquire and use a Mandrake on multiple enemies simultaneously

The first step is acquiring these plants. The most cost-effective way to do this is to purchase seeds for them from Dogweed and Deathcap and then grow them. However, this also requires a small pot for Mandrakes and a large pot for Venomous Tentaculas.

Players that don't want to worry about all that can simply buy them directly from the same store, with Mandrakes costing 500 Galleons each and Venomous Tentacula costing 600. Now, they'll just find at least two enemies, use the Mandrake to stun them both, and then throw down the Venomous Tentacula to finish the fight.

To actually learn Wingardium Leviosa, players should head to the Greenhouses and attend Herbology class by watching a short cutscene. They'll then need to speak to Professor Garlick, who will proceed to teach them Wingardium Leviosa. As with other spells in Hogwarts Legacy, players will need to follow the button prompts and the pattern on the screen to permanently learn the spell, which can then be equipped to any space on the spell wheel.

How to Use Wingardium Leviosa in Hogwarts Legacy

Wingardium Leviosa is a Utility spell, meaning that it has absolutely no combat application. Instead, it is frequently needed in exploration and for solving puzzles. To use it, players should cast the spell on any highlighted object and continue to hold R2/RT. Alternatively, using Accio on something will also activate Wingardium Leviosa once the item is dragged toward the player.

The object will now move around with the player. Pushing the right stick up or down will cause the item to be raised or lowered. The D-Pad can also be used to manipulate the object, with the left and right buttons spinning the item and the up and down buttons pushing it further away or pulling it closer.

Hogwarts Legacy is available now on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. PS4 and Xbox One ports are scheduled to release on April 4; the Nintendo Switch version is arriving on July 25, 2023.
