Hogwarts Legacy gives players full control over their fashion, allowing them to make any piece of gear look like any other gear that they've owned in the past. This freedom is excellent, as it allows players to wear the gear with the highest stats they can find while still looking however they want to. The game never really tells players how to do this, but many have figured it out for themselves since the game released. While changing gear appearance in Hogwarts Legacy is mostly common knowledge by now, not many players know that it's actually possible to wear cloaks and robes with the hood up as well.

There are six main slots for gear in Hogwarts Legacy, Handwear, Facewear, Headwear, Neckwear, Cloaks and Robes, and Outfit. As students at the famed wizarding school, players all begin the game with the Traditional School Robe sporting their house colors. The robe defaults to having the hood down, but there's a simple solution for players wanting to wear their hoods up instead.

Wearing cloak and robe hoods up can be done with just a single button press from the gear menu, but it's still very easy to miss. Hover over whatever cloak or robe the player has equipped and there will be an option for "Hood On/Off" right next to the Change Appearance option. The control to do this is different on each gaming platform that Hogwarts Legacy is available on.

  • On Xbox Series X, press Y
  • On PC, right click

Naturally, cloaks and robes are the only piece of gear that have this option, as outfits, handwear, facewear, headwear, and scarves don't have hoods that can be toggled. It's also worth noting that there are some gear appearances classified as cloaks and robes that don't have hoods such as capes or certain coats. There are no mechanical benefits to wearing the hood up or down (it won't help Hogwarts Legacy players sneak up on Nifflers or other magical beasts), so this is purely a cosmetic choice that players are free to make.

It's possible to play through the entirety of Hogwarts Legacy all the way to the end game content without ever realizing that hoods can be toggled on or off, but this is a cool feature that should not be overlooked, especially by players that like to choose their appearance based on roleplaying factors. Sneaking into a Bandit Castle at night seems just a bit cooler when wearing one's robe hood up over their face.

Hogwarts Legacy is available now on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. PS4 and Xbox One ports are scheduled to release on April 4, and the Nintendo Switch version arrives on July 25, 2023.
