Black Desert Online is a veritable buffet when it comes to adventure. Nearly every corner of the map is free to explore, save for a few. One of those unreachable places lies past the dock at Port Ratt. Closed gates and invisible walls have taunted players since the port first debuted with the Great Ocean expansion in 2019. Though Port Ratt will be changing with the Land of the Morning Light expansion, Black Desert Online players will soon get to set foot in the far off continent of Haso.

For a Korean MMO, Black Desert Online has had little Korean flavor. The world had largely been inspired by Europe's Renaissance and Medieval periods - with the east and southeastern area of the map taking inspiration from the Middle East and South Asia respectively. Though there had been many Asian-inspired playable characters, it felt like something was missing from the world. Further, the majority of the playable classes have a visitable homeland, yet characters like Musa and Maewah didn't. That changes with the introduction of the Land of the Morning Light.

New Races, More Grinding, and End Game Upgrades for Black Desert Online

During last December's Calpheon Ball it was revealed that the new continent would be inspired by Korea's Joseon Era, with folk tales and legends familiar to Korean players. The new races that inhabit Haso are also inspired by Korean fairy tales - like the tiger-men called Horang - though hopefully the new Tortoise and Hare folk are a little more friendly toward each other than Papus and Otters.

Most fans are well aware of Black Desert Online's grindy nature. The Land of the Morning Light should come as a relief to those tired of Elvia zones, as the new content will be focused on a more boss-rush style of gameplay. In a move perhaps inspired by the success of Elden Ring, each of the 5 bosses showcased in the trailer will have their own unique storylines and methods to defeat them. The differences in the bosses can be seen between the ghostly Bamboo Legion and the main storyline's big bad demon tiger, Sangoon. Each boss is designed be solo-able, but co-op content with guild members will also be available. As fun as it is to get tossed off a hill by Karanda, players can look forward to something a little more challenging with these bosses.

The new region's quest lines will be a continuation of Black Desert Online's updated storytelling system, featuring cutscenes and voice acting, though that also seems to have been improved upon. Players can look forward to branching storylines including tracking down the beautiful monster Gumiho, or joining the Striped Sentries as they attempt to defeat Sangoon. A familiar face will also be making a return, as the Black Desert Online character Yeonwha will be continuing her story from the Magnus quest line, exploring how her homeland has changed since her absence. Where previous storylines were linear, players will be able to explore Haso at their leisure and choose what direction they want their story to take. Those decisions will impact the ending of the story, which is reported to have two endings.

As with the other expansions, the Land of the Morning Light will be featuring the next piece of end-game gear - Dahn's Gloves. Players can also look forward to the newest best-in-slot crystals, which feature an intense number of buffs. Though the power creep in Black Desert Online is already massive, hopefully players won't have to worry about YARing for spot at any of the boss zones. The Land of the Morning Light expansion is expected to release in Korea this March, with an expected 2-3 month wait for localization for other regions.

Black Desert Online is on Mobile, PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
