Dr Disrespect is at it again, this time with praise and excitement for an upcoming FPS game. The content creator has shown a keen interest in the genre throughout his career, though not always for the better.

It's no secret that The Doc is one to stir up controversy (and in fact has permanently lost his Twitch account over unknown reasons) and frequently trolls other players as well. But even he can take interest in upcoming games that show promise, and with more positive remarks than his usual banter.

In this particular case, The Doc highlighted the upcoming FPS The Finals, which he described as a combination of Battlefield, Team Fortress 2, and Overwatch. In fact, the game is being developed by former members of the Battlefield team who have since founded Embark Studios for which The Finals is the team's first major project. As The Doc states regarding the ambitious game:

“You always have to appreciate a big vision and a unique take and then pull off at a good and high level. .. [And] if destruction is not done right, it can be really bad. I think we have seen a lot of examples where it does not add to the gameplay. It’s tricky, but based on what we just saw right there, it can complement the gameplay.

For context purposes, Embark Studios dates back to 2018 and counts several former Battlefield team members among its ranks, including former franchise lead and Embark CEO Patrick Söderlund, Battlefield: Bad Company 2 artist Robert Runesson, and Battlefield 3 audio director Stefan Srandberg. Embark also laid the groundwork for other studios and development teams such as Wayfinder Games. And while The Doc himself is not a Battlefield expert per se, the level of influence on The Finals is unmistakable. This includes the destructible environments for which Battlefield is known for, and which The Finals takes influence from as well. The Doc was attracted to The Finals by genre expert Jackfrags, who was fortunate to share an early look at the game.

Games that blend elements from a multitude of competing projects are often among the most ambitious projects in game development, and while they don't always work out they do offer alternatives and in some cases outright combinations of mechanics from the games that inspired their creation. The Finals is one such game, with a premise that combines the game show inspiration of Mad World with the arena shooter mechanics of games like Team Fortress 2 and Unreal Tournament among its other sources of influence.

In fact, The Finals did remind a commenter of the latter inspiration, which The Doc also concurred with in stating that “[i]t’s got a little personality, I can see a little Unreal personality in it for sure.” It remains to be seen just how well The Finals will represent its heritage in arena shooters and environmental destruction, even for all the promise that is shown to date.

The Finals is in development for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X.
