Indie MMO Spotlight: Server Admins - 1, DDoS Scum - 0

Columns Indie MMO Spotlight 0

Each week, we scour the internet for all things indie MMO-related, so you don’t have to. This week, Zenith launches on PSVR2, The Cycle talks new weapons in Season 3, and we get a review in progress for Gloria Victis. Plenty of other stuff is also going on, so let’s quit wasting time and get started with this week’s Indie MMO Spotlight.

BitCraft

You might wear sunglasses at night, but BitCraft Twitter cautions us on the use of axes at night. In a more substantial post, Clockwork Labs posted their February Answers from the Developers on Medium, where they answer community questions such as, “Will certain regions be only to grow/produce items in that area, so towns can trade with each other?” and “Are we able to make our own servers?”

Book of Travels

Update 0.28.3 went live on Monday and here are the patch notes.

The Cycle: Frontier

With Season 3 rapidly approaching, Yager posted a new video featuring the new weapons coming in the update.

Dragon and Home

Update 1.0.34 was released this week, adding a new tracking system to Dragon and Home. The new interface will allow players to track quests and NPCs, and highlight resource types in the world. There is also the option to add player-defined markers to the map.

Dreamworld

The Dreamworld team continues to put out weekly updates to the MMORPG. The patch updates usually list a handful of minor updates, but little things can add up over time. That begs the question, at what point do these weekly updates swing the narrative behind Dreamworld from negative to positive? Or is that even possible?

Dual Universe

Update 1.3 went live on Friday. The patch notes include a long list of new features, balance changes, and general improvements and bug fixes. A new video series surfaced this week - Ask Aphelia Mini Guides. Currently, the series features five videos covering some basic gameplay elements. There is a form to fill out if you have questions you would like covered.

Embers Adrift

In its first step towards free-to-play (purely my opinion and not based on any official announcement), Stormhaven Studios announced a price drop for the box price and subscription for Embers Adrift. Still sticking to a one-time purchase and subscription model, the new box price will be $29.99 with a $9.99 monthly subscription.

Farwoods

Farwoods implemented a burrow expiration mechanic this week. Characters will have their borrows wiped from the game after 180 days of inactivity.

Genfanad

Genfanad was accepting applications for Player Moderators. Sorry, the application period has already ended, so you missed the chance to apply if you aren’t already subscribed to Genfanad’s Discord channel. In other news, the weekly patch focused on combat rebalances along with the new quest, It’s Not Easy Being Green. And with more players joining every day, a second server has been spun up to help ease the pressure and reduce lag.

Gloria Victis

It’s week two of post-launch Gloria Victis and the devs are still primarily focused on squashing bugs and fixing server issues. GV also saw some real-world PvP in the form of a DDoS attack this week. The servers were down for a bit, but it appears their server providers have repelled the first round of attacks. Hopefully, there will be no further attacks, but scum will always be scum.

So just how is Gloria Victis looking after all of its pre-launch patches? Emily Byrnes has been playing since launch and takes a moment to give us an update on how things are going in the Gloria Victis Review In Progress.

Mirage Online Classic

A new dungeon, Northcoast Lockdown, was added to Mirage Online Classic this week. You can gain access to the new dungeon through the front gate of the Northcoast Jail. An alternate entry method exists that requires you to be killed by a Guard while on a safe map.

Mist Legacy

If you came across Mist Legacy during Steam’s Games From Quebec promotion a few weeks ago but quit playing because it didn’t have enough hand-holding, you’re in luck. Alex Sinclair Lack aided in the development of Mist Legacy by writing dialog for the title, and now he’s put together a guide for mmogames.com with 30 tips for new and intermediate players.

Project F4E

The devs announced that they are changing direction on the development of Project F4E from a MOBA-like MMO to a “loot and extract” style of game. Is this a good change or just a last-ditch shift to an already crowded flavor of the month genre?

Prosperous Universe

Development Log #374 outlines the changes made in the second and third parts of the New Player Journey, giving new players a better introduction to space flight and trading at the commodity exchanges.

Ravendawn

A new dev blog sheds some light on Ravencards, Ravendawn’s card system that will be used to enhance your skills. The blog showcases the current set of Archery Ravencards, with the caveat that they are still a work in progress and values could change before Open Beta.

Realm of the Mad God

Update 3.3.4.0 is now living, adding two new ST Sets to RotMG, the Plague Doctor Priest and Onmyoji Ninja. The update also kicked off the Mardi Gras event which runs through Monday, February 27th.

Star Sonata 2

There is a new dev diary on the Star Sonata 2 Steam page that previews the upcoming Refined & Reforged patch

Super Spatial

Update 0.16.0 went live on Wednesday. The new patch added dynamic shadows to the world, as well as a local notification system.

Tatsumeeko

The weekly dev blog gives a preview of the updated Parina Island, a new Ally stat, and the usual flood of concept art.

The Wagadu Chronicles

The Wagadu Chronicles is now on TikTok.

War of Dragnorox

Be sure to check out the February Update for War of Dragnorox. The blog post is short and sweet, with mostly vague “we’re working on stuff” vibes, but it does mention the team is preparing a video series to show off the world and gameplay that should be available in a few months.

Zenith: The Last City

Alongside the PSVR2 launch, Ramen VR shared a new launch trailer for the PSVR2 version of Zenith.
