ConcernedApe's simulation RPG Stardew Valley was a complete revelation when it launched onto the scene in 2016. The critically acclaimed title became the epitome of cozy gaming, and since its release, a plethora of similar games have tried to follow suit. One title that fans of Stardew Valley might also enjoy is Witchbrook, a life sim and social RPG that ticks a lot of the same boxes as the popular farming sim. Chucklefish's upcoming game will make use of a pixel art style that feels instantly reminiscent of Stardew Valley, and the indie developer even helped publish ConcernedApe's creation.

When a title achieves as much success as ConcernedApe's masterpiece, it's inevitable that a number of other games would try to emulate it. Many games have tried to present their own version of Stardew Valley, with mixed results. Usually, they attempt to add a new layer to the formula or put their own spin on it, and this can also lead to some inventive or even excellent games in their own right. While it might not be out yet, Witchbrook is already shaping up to be an intriguing extension of what Stardew Valley started.

Witchbrook was originally announced way back in 2018, so players have had a long time to wait for Chucklefish's as-yet-unreleased RPG. This cozy coming-of-age tale follows players as they help their witch-in-training protagonist thrive at Witchbook College. Gamers take on the role of the resident witch in the small but vibrant seaside town of Mossport as they undertake their studies, befriend the locals, and uncover the area's secrets. With a more scholarly focus compared to Stardew Valley, players can attend classes, complete assignments, and earn accolades at their college, all the while honing their witchy skills.

Learning about the NPCs that surround the player reveals more about the history of the town, and each one has their own unique story and potential relationship to explore, just like Stardew Valley. There's more to life than school in Witchbrook, and gamers can pursue other extracurricular activities like gardening or photography, on top of potential romances and friendships. Once they've graduated, they can continue to build a life in the Mossport community, helping their neighbors with tasks and working on their magical abilities too.

Witchbrook's Stardew Valley Vibes

While Witchbrook may be pursuing a more education-focused adventure with heavier overtones of magic and mystery, it still bears an unmistakable trace of Stardew Valley's influence. From its nostalgic but delightful design to its focus on making friends among the local townspeople, there are enough similarities between Witchbrook and Stardew Valley that fans of the latter will likely be drawn to the former. This follows a trend in gaming in recent years, particularly in the indie sphere, for titles to aim for a slower pace and present players with a relaxing and rewarding experience rather than an action-packed one.

This doesn't mean gamers can just take it easy, as Witchbrook still contains some challenges to break up the pattern of exploring the seaside community and reveling in the beautifully-designed environments. Players can also challenge their friends and rivals to broom races, as well as indulge in some kind of multiplayer (although Chucklefish hasn't yet elaborated on what this multiplayer element will look like). With seasonal events similar to Stardew Valley's to enjoy, spells to learn, and a magical town to explore, Witchbrook seems like just the ticket for a pleasant few hours of gaming.

Witchbrook is in development for PC.
