Run-ins with violent NPCs are common in Fallout: New Vegas, but a new mod answers the question of what would happen if every single character across the Mojave Desert had their own Fat Man nuke launcher. In a game in which player choice really does matter, fans of Obsidian Entertainment's 2010 take on the Fallout series have lavished praises on the company's version of post-apocalyptic America, particularly when it comes to the game's story and writing. Unfortunately, the studio has not had a go at a follow-up, but many fans would no doubt love to see a New Vegas sequel.
Fortunately, the franchise is still going strong under Bethesda's wing, and with Fallout 5 being confirmed in 2022, there's at least something to look forward to, especially given the initial disappointment that was Fallout 76. However, as deep and physically enormous as each game is, what helps keep them alive is the modding community which continues to put out custom content, and New Vegas is no stranger to this.
Recently, Nexus Mods user PinkShoeLace put out "Oops All Fatman," a modification that replaces all NPC weapons with the titular, and cumbersome, mini nuke launcher. On the off chance that this isn't chaotic enough, the modder also says that all melee weapons Fallout: New Vegas characters have in their possession are swapped out for "holy hand grenades." A short video shows the mod in action, in which a bunch of NPCs do battle with each other, and the ensuing fight consists of a series of explosions before all but one is obliterated.
The Fat Man is easily one of the most powerful and impractical weapons in Fallout. Inspired by a real nuclear weapon of the same name, this huge piece of artillery takes up quite a bit of weight in the player's inventory. It's obviously very destructive and dangerous to use, especially in tight spaces. As can be seen in PinkShoeLace's mod, the idea of giving every NPC their own Fat Man is something that can only end in chaos, amusing though it may be to watch as everybody launches nukes at each other.
The base game is known for its dark sense of humor, and this mod seems to take that a step further. While there's no sequel on the horizon, Obsidian's CEO is interested in making a new Fallout game. Whether this will come to fruition cannot be said at this stage, but at least there are plenty of silly ways for players to enhance their experience across the Mojave.
