Jennifer Lawrence came forward to clarify her controversial comments regarding her place in the history of female-led action movies in the promotional campaign for her part in Causeway. The actress, most famous for her role in The Hunger Games, offered a more nuanced version of her statement during a different interview.

Lawrence spoke with Viola Davis - who recently joined The Hunger Games prequel cast in a villainous role - as part of Variety's Actors on Actors series last year. During the interview, Lawrence commented, “I remember when I was doing Hunger Games, nobody had ever put a woman in the lead of an action movie, because it wouldn’t work, we were told. Girls and boys can both identify with a male lead, but boys cannot identify with a female lead.” The statement garnered instant backlash, with many taking to social media to deride the actress.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Lawrence clarified the statement. “[It] certainly not what I meant to say at all. I know that I am not the only woman who has ever led an action film," Lawrence said. "What I meant to emphasize was how good it feels. And I meant that with Viola — to blow past these old myths that you hear about … about the chatter that you would hear around that kind of thing. But it was my blunder and it came out wrong. I had nerves talking to a living legend.” The revised statement holds, and Davis' legend has been more than cemented by her lead role in The Woman King.

Starting in 2012, Lawrence starred in The Hunger Games, a sci-fi adventure film franchise set in a dystopian North American country named Panem. Based on the novel trilogy by Suzanne Collins, the story follows Katniss, a young girl who volunteers as a tribute instead of her sister as a participant in their society’s battle royale-style contest between 12 poor districts for resources given by the rich and technologically advanced central Capitol. The films were a roaring success, inspiring several related projects and a Hunger Games prequel film that started filming in 2022.

While Lawrence has seen her fair share of controversy during her time in the limelight, the actress isn't likely to stop starring in blockbusters anytime soon. One franchise that comes to mind is the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which Lawrence has expressed interest in joining but not in her previous Mystique role. Whether or not she’ll helm another action movie can only be speculated for now.
