One creative fan of FromSoftware’s hit action RPG Elden Ring used their artistic skills to transform some of the game’s NPCs and bosses from horrifying to huggable by giving them a Cuphead-inspired reimagining. The beautiful art style of the FromSoftware title helped make the menacing and melancholy realm of the Land Between one of the most memorable game worlds in recent years, becoming so popular with gamers that the developer recently announced that it would be releasing an official Elden Ring art book.

A true evolution of the Soulslike genre that FromSoftware established with 2009’s Demon’s Souls and the wildly popular Dark Souls series, Elden Ring transports the developer’s signature gameplay style to an open world filled with mysterious and menacing inhabitants. The winner of numerous Game of the Year awards in 2022, Elden Ring’s intriguing setting and polished gameplay helped it attract both long-time FromSoftware fans as well as fans new to the developer’s distinct brand of challenging, highly technical combat. The immense popularity of the game not only helped breathe new life into the Soulslike genre, but also inspired a flood of incredible Elden Ring fan art.

In a new post on the r/Eldenring subreddit, user Beban_ shared a series of illustrations they created depicting various Elden Ring bosses and NPCs in the 1930s aesthetic of Studio MDHR’s animated brawler Cuphead. The second in a series of Cuphead-inspired makeovers of major characters from Elden Ring, Beban_’s charming illustrations provide a humorous spin on even some of the most terrifying enemies in the game. From Starscourge Radahn’s undersized horse comically straining under the boss’s massive frame to Radagon of the Golden Order holding his hammer aloft with an almost comically puny arm, the illustrations do a fantastic job of blending the two disparate gaming properties.

Fans of Elden Ring responding to the post loved the unique spin on the game’s characters, with multiple comments praising Beban_ for combining the two games so seamlessly. Several commenters listed off various other Elden Ring characters that they felt deserved a similar makeover, leading Beban_ to reassure them that all the main characters will eventually receive a Cuphead-inspired tribute. Noticing a resemblance to classic cartoon character Popeye’s long-time girlfriend, one Redditor pointed out that the reimagined Rennala looked strikingly similar to Olive Oil, whom Beban_ stated they used as a reference when drawing her.

These wildly original pieces of fabulous fan art serve as a wonderful tribute to both Elden Ring’s incredible character design and Cuphead’s iconic art style. As fans of FromSoftware’s mega-hit wait for more news about the rumored ‘huge’ DLC coming to Elden Ring, these delightful drawings are a wonderful way to revisit some of the game’s best characters.

Elden Ring is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
