Spoiler Warning: This article contains MAJOR SPOILERS for God of War Ragnarok.

God of War Ragnarok had one of the most exhilarating stories in recent years with Kratos and Atreus being put to the test as the destruction of Asgard loomed. However, one character from 2018’s God of War, Freya, was hellbent on destroying the Ghost of Sparta, but eventually changed her mind and set her focus on Odin instead. As her character continued to develop in God of War Ragnarok, Freya finally lets go of her past tragedies and comes to terms with her pain in a fitting ending for her story in the game.

Freya is one of the most powerful characters in the God of War series and this made her eventual alliance with Kratos and Atreus extremely important for the final fight against the forces of Asgard. Being a Vanir Goddess, Freya possesses powerful magic including manipulating nature and shapeshifting, and she is also a honed warrior crowned as the Queen of the Valkyries prior to her fallout with Odin and banishment to Midgard. While 2018’s God of War depicted her as a witch in the woods, God of War Ragnarok finally shows Freya as a queen, friend, sister, and mother, bringing her true nature to the forefront.

Why Does Freya Hate Odin?

At the start of God of War: Ragnarok, Freya is chasing after Kratos and Atreus in an attempt to kill the Ghost of Sparta who was responsible for killing her son, Baldur, in 2018’s God of War. However, as the events of the game continue to unfold, Freya soon realizes that Odin was the one responsible for all her tragedies, from losing her son to not being able to return home to the realm of Vanaheim. This turns the focus of her rage away from Kratos and towards Odin, the one person she now sees as the only one responsible for the death of Baldur.

Prior to the events of 2018’s God of War, Odin banished Freya to Midgard, preventing her from traveling to other realms in the hopes of squashing any rebellion from Vanaheim. This ultimately sets the path for Freya to forgive Kratos and come to the realization that her son would not be dead if it was not for Odin’s obsession with the mask and surviving the prophecy of Ragnarok. After Kratos helps her release the spell binding her to Midgard, she vows to kill Odin and bring about peace within herself so that she can finally grieve the death of her son.

The Death of Odin

At the end of God of War Ragnarok’s main quest line, Kratos, Atreus, and Freya battle Odin in Asgard moments before Ragnarok destroys the realm. The trio is able to defeat Odin and when Atreus pleads that he lets go of his desire to understand everything about his future, Odin plainly refuses, stating that he must know what is to come. This forces Atreus to seal away Odin’s soul, using the same spell he inadvertently used on Fenrir at the start of God of War Ragnarok, putting an end to the All-Father’s rampage once and for all.

Atreus hands Kratos the marble that now contains Odin’s soul, and Kratos gives it to Freya, giving her a chance to finally take vengeance for her son. Instead of destroying it, however, Freya comes to the realization that killing off Odin will not take away the sadness she holds in her heart. Freya hands the marble back to Atreus before Sindri walks in and destroys the marble, getting revenge for his now-dead brother, Brok, who was stabbed when he uncovered that Odin was disguising himself as Tyr.

God of War Ragnarok gave the Norse saga of the series a fitting ending but still left one big question unanswered, whether the series will continue to follow Kratos going forward, or if fans will get a God of War game with Atreus as the main character instead. Throughout its action-packed story, the game featured excellent character development for many important Norse figures including Freya, Thor, and Angrboda. However, it was Freya’s development from antagonist to ally that was highlighted a lot more than those of the other supporting characters in God of War Ragnarok.

God of War Ragnarok is available on PS4 and PS5.
