Obsidian Entertainment once considered doing an RPG of The Walking Dead, but as everyone will know, that never came to fruition. Famous for making what many consider to be one of the best Fallout games of all time, Fallout: New Vegas, the California-based studio has something of a reputation for creating captivating stories. While many would like to see the team tackle another entry in the long-running post-apocalyptic series, that so far has yet to occur, but there is at least a healthy body of work already under the developer's belt for fans to check out.

From early releases like Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2 and Alpha Protocol to later games such as The Outer Worlds and Grounded, not to mention the upcoming Avowed, the company has more than proven itself in the cutthroat world of the gaming industry. Obsidian's most recent outing is the medieval-themed adventure title Pentiment, which sees players get sucked into a heavy 16th-century narrative involving murder, mystery, and philosophical musings on the human condition. However, there was a chance that the studio could have made more games from already popular franchises.

In a recent interview with NME, Obsidian Entertainment co-founder and current CEO Feargus Urquhart discussed his role as an important figure in game development, especially in the RPG genre. As well as the impressive resume of titles he and his team have already left in their wake, it turns out there were ideas for yet more games. First and foremost, Obsidian had an idea for a role-playing title based on the Walking Dead series but was unable to find a publisher interested enough in the project. On top of that, Urquhart was also keen to do a Rick and Morty game, but this fizzled out after Microsoft acquired the developer in 2018.

The Walking Dead releases are considered to be some of the best from Telltale Games, focusing on human emotions and character development rather than being straight-up zombie games. As lauded as the adventure series was, it would have been interesting to see how Obsidian would have tackled an adaptation of Robert Kirkman and Tony Moore's comic.

It's the game that will never be, it seems. However, Obsidian has said it would like to do another Fallout game at some point. There's no telling whether this will actually become a reality, but there will be more than enough fans out there who would love to see Obsidian Entertainment make a follow-up to the beloved New Vegas.
