Among Us has already seen massive success as an indie sleeper hit, and now it's making similar waves as a VR game. A new report from the developer reveals that the virtual reality version of the game, Among Us VR, has hit a massive sales milestone just months following its release.

Among Us originally launched back in 2018, but didn't really take off until 2020, when it soared in popularity. Streamers helped to propel awareness of the title, and those who were stuck at home due to the pandemic ended up enjoying it as a way to stay connected with those they were physically separated from. The title's newfound popularity was enough for the developers to hold off on an Among Us 2, instead choosing to further support the existing title.

Among Us VR launched in late 2022, and now, just 10 weeks later, the developer has come forward with an update on how it's performing. According to a tweet from the game's official account, the title has sold over 1 million copies despite its short time on the market. In addition, the game has seen over 4 million play sessions from players across 122 countries. It seems the virtual reality adaptation of the game has pleased players, and with the developer promising updates to the title through the year, it's likely those numbers will continue to rise.

Among Us VR is likely succeeding not only due to the extreme popularity of the original game, but due to an uptick in virtual reality headsets being in average gamers' homes. The Meta Quest 1 and 2 have helped to fuel this surge, providing an affordable method of enjoying virtual reality without the need to be tethered to a powerful PC. The Valve Index has also seen a lot of success, and Sony's PS VR2 is set to launch in the near future. Virtual reality can be a lot of fun, but games like these are far more likely to succeed among those who already own VR headsets and know what they can expect from the medium.

While not every gamer is interested in virtual reality, there's a lot that it can add to gaming experiences, especially when dealing with horror games like Resident Evil Village or tension-filled games like Among Us. Impostors are difficult enough to detect and avoid in the original version of Among Us, but physically looking over one's shoulder makes matters even more nerve-wracking. It will be interesting to see how Among Us VR fares as one of PS VR2's launch games.

Among Us VR is available now for Meta Quest 2, PS VR, and SteamVR.
