Nintendo games are sometimes unfairly labeled as casual experiences by many players who aren't familiar with them. It's a shame, since the majority of titles in the Nintendo Switch's library always boast the highest level of excellence and are an absolute joy to play through. That being said, there's no denying that some Nintendo Switch games can be pretty easy and not really test the player. This can lull them into a false sense of security for some of the more challenging moments.

The final boss in a game is always meant to be a source of great celebration and spectacle. In some instances, it can really test the player and everything they've learned, despite the rest of the title being a relative walk in the park. Here are some great examples of easy Nintendo Switch games that ended up giving a major sucker punch right when players reached the final boss.

5 Necron (Final Fantasy 9)

Necron in Final Fantasy 9

The fact that the majority of Final Fantasy games are on the Switch is a source of great joy for many. Players can check out some of the most legendary JRPGs of all time on a portable console without any drawbacks. A game in the series that many fans love is Final Fantasy 9, which is pretty easy-going until players reach the final stage. Here, a great boss fight against Kuja is followed up by one of the most unearned curveballs of all time.

Necron is a random character that comes out of nowhere near the end of Final Fantasy 9 and takes over the role of the final boss. If that wasn't bad enough as is, he's also an extremely difficult enemy who can cast his patented Grand Cross ability to afflict a bunch of status effects on the party. This is not an ideal situation in the slightest. Players need to boost all their resistances while dealing a steady stream of damage to Necron if they want to finish this game once and for all.

4 Bellower (The Banner Saga)

Bellower (The Banner Saga)

The Banner Saga is one of the most beautiful games on the Nintendo Switch, with its meticulously hand-drawn graphics being quite beautiful to behold. It helps that the combat is also sublime, mixing a fair share of strategy and spectacle to make for a truly engaging experience. However, all of this comes crashing down with a final boss that is one of the most unfair encounters of all time.

The Bellower is an intimidating figure that players finally get to fight at the end of The Banner Saga... only to find out that this character is extremely powerful, unbalanced, and ruins all the fun that players were having by forcing them to retry this unfair encounter over and over again. It's one of the most baffling difficulty spikes in gaming history that led to many people giving up on this title at the very final stretch. It's a shame given how great this title is otherwise.

3 Sans (Undertale)

Undertale Genocide Run with Sans

Undertale is one of the sweetest and most heartwarming video games of all time, with players being discouraged from attacking enemies and gaining experience like other traditional RPGs. However, if players decide to ruin the game's charming vibe by killing every enemy in all the game's stages, then they'll embark on a horrifying Genocide Route that is truly spine-chilling.

Most of the combat encounters in the game become a breeze during the Genocide Run, with the player getting more and more powerful, barring a few exceptions. In fact, the final boss of the game changes altogether, with Sans standing in the player's way. This character is no joke, employing a wealth of powerful attacks that require nigh-perfect reflexes from the player if they want to witness this twisted route's ending.

2 Galdera (Octopath Traveler)

Galdera from Octopath Traveler

Octopath Traveler's HD-2D art style and amazing combat made it a standout modern JRPG on the Nintendo Switch. The game might have had its share of faults, but there's no denying that it's still a great experience that fans of the genre will have a great time with. After finishing the personal storylines of each character, the player can embark on a journey that will bring them face-to-face with the real final boss of the game, Galdera.

This boss is no joke and will absolutely decimate players who weren't building a well-rounded party. The fight against Galdera has two phases, with two parties splitting to tackle this imposing boss. The deity hits like a truck, has annoying recovery skills, and requires a sound strategy from the player to guarantee success. The difficulty of the Galdera fight is genuinely surprising, making the rest of the game seem like a cakewalk in comparison.

1 Neo Exdeath (Final Fantasy 5)

Final Fantasy 5 is a grand adventure that shows the iconic job system of the series at its very peak. Discovering jobs and mastering their abilities makes for a great time, even if the majority of the game isn't really all that challenging. Players can be breeze through most of the game without paying too much attention to the job system.

However, players who take the game lightly will be severely punished during the final fight. After seemingly defeating Exdeath, this malevolent entity comes back as Neo Exdeath, sporting a new twisted form that hits like a truck. Players need to heal at regular intervals and set up proper defenses before even thinking about damaging this powerful boss.
