JRPGs don't really have a reputation for being all that difficult, with sound tactics or high levels being more than enough to tackle the biggest threats in most games. As long as players don't experience frequent lapses in judgment, they should be able to get through the majority of encounters in these games without too many problems.

So, it can be especially jarring if everything goes smoothly only for the final boss to become the most challenging encounter in the entire game. This can come completely out of left field and take the player unawares, leading to a string of frustrating and demoralizing game overs unless people know exactly what they're doing. Here are some of the toughest final bosses in JRPGs that are pretty easy otherwise.

8 Necron (Final Fantasy 9)

Necron in Final Fantasy 9

Final Fantasy 9 is considered by many to be the greatest game in the series, but even this beloved title isn't perfect. The game set up a perfect climactic confrontation with Kuja...only for the real final boss to be someone that most players hadn't even heard of until that point.

Not only does Necron come out of nowhere to steal this important spotlight, but he's an absolute pain to fight against too. Players who don't have adequate status resistances set up can only watch in horror as this boss completely obliterates the party with Grand Cross.

7 Sans (Undertale)

Undertale Genocide Run with Sans

Though it may not have been made in Japan, many feel that this indie game encapsulates the JRPG style thanks to its design, themes, battle system, and overall feel. Undertale is a sweet and friendly JRPG that players can turn into a murderous tale if they go down the Genocide Route. Not only do battles get harder in this route, but the nature of the final boss also changes quite a bit.

Instead of the usual battles that players have to go through, the true final fight in the game is against none other than Sans himself. The fight against this character is a grueling one, meant solely to stop the player from accomplishing the heinous task of killing everybody in the realm.

6 Nyx Avatar (Persona 3)

Persona 3 is another game that can be challenging unless players know how to target weaknesses and bolster their party's stats. Even then, the final fight of the game is a lengthy affair that can take players quite some time to complete.

This battle can easily take an hour if players don't know what to expect. Nyx Avatar changes its Arcana multiple times before settling on a final form that is pretty long and can send players to an early grave if they don't end up covering their weaknesses in time.

5 Galdera (Octopath Traveler)

Octopath Traveler Galdera

There's no denying that Octopath Traveler can be a pretty challenging game early on, but players who get all the party members and keep them leveled up and well-equipped will find later challenges in the game to be way easier. However, this difficulty curve spikes immensely after players reach Galdera.

This boss fight itself is hidden behind a few side quests, but is definitely the final battle that players need to go through, with these quests linked to the individual storylines of each character in the game. There are two grueling phases to this boss fight that can be quite a pain to get through unless players are prepared to take on the challenge.

4 Cloud Of Darkness (Final Fantasy 3)

Final Fantasy 3 can be pretty easy once players get the hang of the job system. However, even this mastery won't prepare them for the difficulty curve that occurs during the final dungeon.

Players need to employ the best jobs and skills they have at their disposal to even stand a chance of beating the Cloud of Darkness. Failing to use proper strategies will lead to this malevolent foe decimating the party in record time.

3 The Seven Heroes (Romancing SaGa 2)

The Seven Heroes in Romacing SaGa 2

Romancing SaGa is an underrated trilogy of excellent JRPGs that more people need to check out. The second game in the series is a ton of fun in its own right, but the game certainly ramps up the difficulty when the players reach the final boss.

This boss slowly creeps into the battle with a suite of skills that can be so powerful and swift that players won't even get a chance to act before being decimated. Using Quicktime is downright necessary to remain swift in combat and get much-needed heals to prevent party members from being KO'd too quickly.

2 Lavos (Chrono Trigger)

Lavos from Chrono Trigger

Chrono Trigger is one of the greatest JRPGs of all time, featuring a unique mechanic where players can simply go and fight Lavos whenever they want. Of course, this isn't recommended at all, since Lavos will destroy any early arrivals to the party in a humiliating fashion.

Even if players fight him when intended, Lavos is anything but easy. Unless a vast number of side jobs are completed, Lavos will prove to be an imposing challenge where players will be tested to their very limits... especially when the phases ramp up in difficulty.

1 Braska's Final Aeon (Final Fantasy 10)

Final Fantasy 10 is no stranger to tough encounters that can take players by surprise who have been cruising through the game otherwise. Yunalesca and Seymour Flux are notable mentions in this regard.

However, players who didn't get the Celestial Weapons will find Braska's Final Aeon to be one of the most challenging battles in the entire game. Without the ability to break the damage limit, Braska's Final Aeon will last around for quite some time and beat up the party with numerous strong attacks that can be hard to predict or counter.
