Monolith made a smart decision by not trying to throw down an estimated release window for Wonder Woman, so it can now take its sweet time in development while other DC Comics games have come into the fold. It is unlikely anything about Wonder Woman will be shared until the summer, or at least until after Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, and that may be one of its biggest opportunities to lie low while Rocksteady’s four-player Arkhamverse installment gains attention.

That attention has recently been stirred with the supposed leak of a menu screen from Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. This leak has been divisive, with some fans saying they trust Rocksteady whether the game has live-service elements like battle passes or not. Other fans have immediately taken this leak as a bad omen for what Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League may become, citing Marvel’s Avengers as a template. Considering how modern DC games are currently troubled with subpar fan reception, Wonder Woman could be a beacon of hope for single-player fans.

Multiplayer DC Games Have an Unfortunate Stigma

Hearing the words “battle pass” or “in-game store” has become a disappointment to many fans in the modern gaming space. Too often those words are associated with a predatory microtransaction agenda in live-service games that are aware they can milk more money out of players.

The argument can be made that fans do not have to purchase any of the additional content these services provide, but they might also be missing out on substantial content this way, and it is upsetting nonetheless for there to be a paywall. Only the menu UI for one screen in Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League has leaked, but some fans already assume the worst regarding what implications that could have for the game.

On the other hand, Gotham Knights has two- and four-player co-op, but is otherwise a solo-focused title. Gotham Knights was received poorly nonetheless, and that reception has already put a lot of strain on fans’ anticipation for Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League.

Both do allow fans to play in single-player exclusively if they want, but the fact that there is any focus on multiplayer has concerned fans. If Gotham Knights and Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League both underperform, it will seemingly be up to Wonder Woman to hold the reputation of AAA DC games on its back until other games are announced.

Wonder Woman Can Play Into Its Single-Player Strengths

Wonder Woman does not need to play like Rocksteady’s Batman games in order to be successful, but it would likely be favorable if Monolith took its previous iteration of rhythmic, parry-based combat from the Middle-earth franchise. Talion had a sword, Celebrimbor could sprint forward with wraith-like speed, and there are many other gameplay mechanics that could be repurposed into a Wonder Woman game.

Regardless of how Wonder Woman looks or is developed, the fact that it is a dedicated single-player game may be a breath of fresh air for fans to rally behind it. Wonder Woman being single-player may not ultimately mean that fans get the ideal gameplay they want from it, but it will at least separate the title from recent DC games that are attempting to implement co-op and multiplayer.

Even if Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League releases and is positively favored, live-service elements and all, Wonder Woman could still offer a reprieve from well-worn multiplayer. It will be interesting to see how similar Wonder Woman could be to Rocksteady’s Arkham games, and if future DC games are in the works that completely eschew multiplayer elements in response to fans’ lamentations.

Wonder Woman is currently in development.
