Avatar Generations, an upcoming free-to-play RPG based on the acclaimed animated show, has received a gameplay trailer showing off the game's turn-based combat along with several popular characters appearing as playable party members. The enduring popularity of Avatar: The Last Airbender and the show's extensive lore, this latest look likely only gives a glimpse into what the final product has to offer.

Although the game will initially follow the core cast from Avatar: The Last Airbender, future expansions will adapt other works in the same universe such as The Legend of Korra, and follow the journeys of other avatars from across the franchise's timeline. With a show as beloved as Avatar, having a game that promises to not only adapt the original plot but delve deeper into the mythos is an exciting prospect for fans to relive their favorite moments while also gaining further insight into their favorite characters.

The gameplay trailer opens with a couple of clips from the show before jumping into a battle with Aang, Katara, Sokka, and Toph and another with Zuko leading a team of firebenders in his design from Book One. After showing what the game's overworld will look like, more of the combat is shown off with varying team combinations including characters like Iroh, hinting at which stories from Avatar the game will adapt and potentially expand upon. The trailer concludes by just stating that the game will be coming soon, meaning there is no release date still.

Avatar has a history of video game adaptations that have never been received with the greatest acclaim, and as brief as the newest trailer is, it certainly looks like Generations will be the most ambitious attempt at translating the show's spirit in the medium. The free-to-play format and mobile exclusivity could turn off some fans, but others will no doubt find a lot to be exciting with the potential of an Avatar game that evolves over time.

Beyond the release of Avatar Generations, fans have plenty to be excited about when it comes to seeing new material. A new trilogy of animated movies based on The Last Airbender has been announced that follow up on the original characters, with the first slated for a release date in 2025. If these upcoming projects live up to expectations, the franchise has the potential to experience a newfound resurgence that not been seen since the conclusion of The Legend of Korra.

Avatar Generations will release in selected territories for Android and iOS.
