Part of why Hogwarts Legacy is able to be so fascinating is its unique setting in an earlier era. The castle and its immediate grounds may be chiefly familiar to purist fans of the IP, but the game’s environments will have creative flourishes that are unfamiliar to all. That is a boon for a number of reasons, especially with fans wanting Hogwarts Legacy to have as little connection as possible to J.K. Rowling’s explicit influence. Regardless, with certain spells, items, and iconic areas present from Hogwarts’ iconography, it may be impossible to fully dissociate it from earlier installments.

Seeing certain areas in the castle or certain animations used for different spells cast may bring too much nostalgia to the game, but that does not necessarily need to carry a negative connotation. There can simply be imagery or sequences that subtly reference moments from the Harry Potter movies; for example, Hogwarts Legacy seems to reference Tom Riddle’s diary in a recent tease. Likewise, it would be fun if a particular spell used in Hogwarts Legacy’s combat would reference the mountain troll fight from Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.

Hogwarts Legacy’s Spells Offer Unique Attack Combinations

Hogwarts Legacy’s basic attack spells allow players to dish out damage consecutively, but attack sequences are continued and expanded upon with correct spell combinations connecting them. Managing to connect a series of spells on an enemy suspended in midair will be a challenge when multiple enemies are afoot, but there are several mechanics players can employ in their strategies to gain an advantage.

Environmental interactions will allow players to hurl explosive red barrels at enemies, for example, but the effects of particular spells could also be incredibly tactful. It is unknown if Expelliarmus would work on any enemy wielding a wand or other armament, but such a spell could remove that targeted enemy from combat for a short period of time.

Moreover, disarmed enemies can have their weapons flung back at them, as was seen with a suit of armor enemy that had its greatsword hurled back at it with a destructive effect. Some spells may then be more useful against certain enemies who can be exploited in such a way, and trolls may be another enemy type whose clubs can be whisked away and used against them in combat.

How Hogwarts Legacy’s Trolls Could Be Disarmed for Nostalgia Value

Much will be changed about Harry Potter’s iconography for better or for worse, such as Hogwarts Legacy’s unique Grand Staircase. Meanwhile, subtle animations could reflect upon the franchise’s memorable moments. Mountain trolls seem to appear frequently as enemies in the game, and it would be excellent if players could disarm them before hurling the club back at them.

This would be a fun nod to Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’s mountain troll fight in the girls’ bathroom, where Ron Weasley levitates the troll’s club out of its hand and drops it back on its head, knocking it unconscious. Players have many ways to deal with monstrous trolls, such as casting Hogwarts Legacy’s one-hit Killing Curse to kill them instantly, but hitting them over the head with their own club would likely be the most satisfying method.

The animation still might not have an identical resemblance to how it looks in the movie, but fans could associate the attack with that scene anyhow. Instead, if Avalanche Software wanted to make this a direct reference to the movie, it could implement this animation as one of Hogwarts Legacy’s combat finishers, which have still yet to be discussed or depicted at length.

Hogwarts Legacy launches on February 10 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X, with PS4 and Xbox One versions coming on April 4 and the Switch version launching on July 25.
