The Game Awards 2022 ceremony has officially come and gone, with major reveals like Final Fantasy 16's release date, Horizon Forbidden West's Burning Shores DLC, Death Stranding 2, and many more making the show. The world premieres are a big draw, but so are the awards, with God of War Ragnarok sweeping up six of its total ten nominations (two of which were for performance).

Indeed, many were expecting a big showing from God of War Ragnarok, and they were not disappointed. The Game Awards 2022 may have announced and awarded several games in the industry, but God of War Ragnarok was a constant presence throughout the show. That's obviously not to say anything against the other titles, but for a night focused on the biggest games in the industry, it was good to see Santa Monica shine as it should.

Here are the awards God of War Ragnarok received during the ceremony.

  • Best Narrative
  • Best Score and Music
  • Best Audio Design
  • Best Performance (Christopher Judge as Kratos)
  • Innovation in Accessibility
  • Best Action/Adventure

It's very clear why God of War Ragnarok won these awards, as its narrative is top-notch, its music and audio are finetuned to the surrounding events, the game is filled with incredible performances (not just Christopher Judge), it has a plethora of unique accessibility features, and it is the best in its genre. As we wrote in our God of War Ragnarok review, it "is a once-in-a-generation game. It doesn't just live up to its high expectations, but it subverts them and expands beyond them all the same. There is nothing quite like it on PS4 or on the PS5 yet, and it would be hard for anything to live up to the same heights."

Going into the Game Awards, many saw this year as primarily a competition between God of War Ragnarok and Elden Ring. It's noteworthy then that God of War Ragnarok won 6 awards, while Elden Ring won 4 awards. It's obviously no balancing act, but while God of War Ragnarok won more awards, Elden Ring arguably won the two biggest of the show: Best Game Direction and Game of the Year. The other two were best RPG and Best Art Direction, so it stands to reason fans of both franchises have a lot to celebrate no matter what.

God of War Ragnarok is available now on PS4 and PS5.
