Assassin's Creed Invictus is just one of many recently announced upcoming projects for the longstanding franchise, marking an end to what was a relative lull in content for the series. Given just how many ambitious projects are now confirmed to be in development for the IP, it is understandable how some of the smaller-scale games have gone under the radar.

While very little is currently known about Assassin's Creed Invictus, there is still a lot that can be inferred about the title from its very brief reveal. As well as this, it is worth looking into the origins of its codename, Invictus, and how this could possibly relate to some core details of the game.

The Core Details of Asssassin's Creed Invictus

Assassins From The Assassin's Creed Franchise

The announcement of Assassin's Creed Invictus actually came after the spate of franchise announcements at September's Ubisoft Forward Event, which officially confirmed the likes of Assassin's Creed Mirage and the long-awaited Japanese-set Assassin's Creed Red. Invictus appears to be a smaller-scale project due to its post-event announcement, or at the very least one that is set to release a lot further down the line.

The only solid information that Ubisoft has revealed regarding Assassin's Creed Invictus is that it is a solely multiplayer-focused title, which sets the project apart quite significantly from the many other announcements for the franchise. It is currently unclear as to how this multiplayer will take shape, but many are already proposing that it will be aiming to recapture the popular multiplayer formula that Assassin's Creed has historically possessed.

Beginning with Assassin's Creed Brotherhood, many AC installments had comprehensive PvP online modes, which saw players go head-to-head in a small-scale environment. Having to blend in with NPCs and utilize a spate of abilities, these online modes would usually see a player be assigned a specific opponent to hunt down and kill, all while avoiding their very own hunter. This form of Assassin's Creed multiplayer proved to be a hit with fans, although it has sadly fallen to the wayside in the franchise's priorities with most of its more contemporary releases. While the likes of Assassin's Creed Unity featured co-operative PvE multiplayer, it seems that fans are most excited at the prospect of Invictus bringing back the series' classic head-to-head online modes.

The Meaning of Assassin's Creed Invictus

It is important to note that, like many of the new projects that will make up the future of the Assassin's Creed franchise, Invictus is currently just a codename for this specific title, and will likely change once the game draws closer to its official release. However, these codenames often loosely tie to some key information of the game in question, with Assassin's Creed Mirage's original codename of Rift hinting at the personality rift in its protagonist, Basim Ibn Ishaq.

The word invictus is Latin for "unconquered," which may indicate that the game is set some time during the Roman Empire's reign. Additionally, the term invictus is most often associated with a poem of the same name written by Victorian poet William Ernest Henley. Henley wrote the poem about his defiant spirit during his recovery from a leg amputation that he received at 16, and it has become a term often associated with perseverance among those with disabilities, as evident in the bi-annual Invictus Games.

Roman and Victorian themes are no stranger to the Assassin's Creed franchise, with 2015's Assassin's Creed Syndicate being majorly set within Victorian England. While it is still of course conjecture as to what setting or core gameplay Invictus will possess, a deeper contextual understanding of the title's codename offers some insight into what some of the possibilities could be.
