Warhammer 40,000: Darktide is first and foremost a game about brutal combat, cunning teamwork, and quick thinking. However, Darktide also throws players a few curveballs. The Auspex is a great example. When a mission requires players to whip out their Auspex, they’re instructed to stow their weapon and wander around scanning objects with the peculiar little device. This leaves them vulnerable and distracted.

As with most things in Darktide, pulling this off requires teamwork. It would be a good strategy to designate one or two players to keep their heads down, scanning debris while the others fend off the murderous horde with the many means of destruction at their disposal.

How to Use the Auspex

An Auspex being used

The Auspex is a handheld device players use to scan for signals that indicate certain samples in the area. It chirps to indicate the player’s proximity to the signal. The faster it chirps, the closer the player is to the source of the signal. All in all, it’s a dangerous task that takes the player out of the action but not out of the line of fire. It can be flustering at first, especially with waves of scabs charging in from every direction. This task will be especially challenging for players struggling to keep up with Darktide’s intimidating system requirements. A low FPS could make it difficult to discern the Auspex’s behavior.

Here’s how to quickly track down the relevant signals with the Auspex:

  1. The player will only have the option to bring out their Auspex when it’s appropriate to do so. When that’s the case, press ‘4’ or Right on a D-pad.
  2. To activate the Auspex’s radar, hold Right Click or Left Trigger. Green spheres appear over the screen in the direction of relevant signals. The closer and larger a bubble is, the closer its signal is.
  3. Head in the direction of a signal. The Auspex can be used to shove enemies, but don’t hesitate to switch to a weapon and cleave through some heretics along the way.
  4. The Auspex chirps faster as the player gets closer to a relevant signal. When they’re right on top of it, the device beeps rapidly, and the green sphere for that signal pulses quickly. Look around to identify the source of the signal. Once spotted, it’ll be highlighted in green.

  5. To scan the source of a signal, keep the Auspex radar activated, point at the object, and hold Left Click or Right Trigger.
  6. Once the requisite number of signals are found, bring them back to the Crypto-Skull for analysis.
