One gamer with some serious dedication has posted a screenshot of their completion stats after beating The Last of Us 2 on the punishing Grounded difficulty. Although the player’s nearly 100-hour completion time may not win any The Last of Us 2 speedrun records, it serves as a testament to the tenacity required to play through Naughty Dog’s cinematic sequel on the hardest difficulty level.

Released in 2020 for the PlayStation 4 by developer Naughty Dog, The Last of Us 2 is a sequel to 2013’s critically and commercially acclaimed The Last of Us. Picking up five years after the first game’s conclusion, The Last of Us 2 lets players take control of the original game’s Ellie along with a new playable character, Abby, as they take on threats both infected and human. The game received generally high praise from critics for its strong storytelling and impressive visuals, although fan reviews were decidedly mixed due to anger over some elements of the game’s plot and the controversies surrounding The Last of Us 2's Abby.

In a post on r/thelastofus, user EmbarrassedMention posted a screenshot of their completion stats after beating The Last of Us 2 on Grounded difficulty along with a question befitting their username, “Should I be ashamed? Embarrassed?” The screenshot included with the post shows that EmbarrassedMention spent nearly 100 hours and died 155 times before completing their impressive feat. Grounded mode, introduced in The Last of Us, increases the accuracy and lethality of enemies while making materials used for upgrades incredibly scarce. To add even more of a challenge, the game was completed with per chapter permadeath, requiring EmbarrassedMention to restart a chapter each time they died.

Many commenters responding to the momentous accomplishment were awe-struck, with one user pointing out that only a minuscule number of players would be willing to attempt such a playthrough, let alone complete it. Other users shared stories of their own attempts at completing the game on Grounded difficulty before eventually abandoning the daunting task. The fact that EmbarrassedMention stated that they still had fun with the game, even on such a grueling difficulty level, is a testament to the title’s solid gameplay and bodes well for gamers eagerly awaiting Naughty Dog’s next game.

For some gamers who’ve already experienced the top-tier storytelling and gameplay of The Last of Us 2, this impressive accomplishment could serve as motivation to dust off their copy of the game and bump up the difficulty level. For series fans looking for a less grueling return to post-apocalyptic Seattle, though, waiting for the January premier of HBO’s The Last of Us TV show may be a much more appealing option.

The Last of Us 2 is available now on PS4.
