Activision appear to have filed for a patent that would allow in-game music to change dynamically depending on the player’s events and reactions.

The patent titled ‘Systems and methods for dynamically generating and modulating music based on gaming events, player profiles and/or player reactions’, would allow for unique soundtracks in games based on what’s going on around the player. This would be instead of just a generic soundtrack that all players would hear.

The idea of music changing during events is not new, however an AI-powered mechanism that dynamically tracks and adjusts soundtracks tied directly to the player profile and in-game events has not yet been done.

According to the patent application: “Music and audio are areas of potential player customization that may be automated and personalized so that each individual player has a unique experience.”

The patent states: “The application describes methods and systems for dynamically generating a music clip for rendering at client devices in a multi-player gaming network.

“Player data and event data are acquired and classified into two or more profiles. The music clip is then generated by identifying a mood based on one of the two or more event profiles and one of the two or more player profiles and modulating one or more music elements of a segment of audio data based on the identified mood.”

It would certainly suit games such as Warzone 2.0 – where gameplay segments change so frequently. For example, cautiously moving up the stairs in a building would be far more tense if a soundtrack accompanied it. While firefights would be a lot more epic if fast-paced action music was layered over it.

Modern Warfare 2 is set for release on October 28, with early campaign access kicking off on Friday 21 October. Warzone 2 and Warzone Mobile are set to follow suit afterwards.
