Marvel fans have received some rather disappointing news regarding the long-awaited X-Men and Fantastic Four reboots. It seems there's a good reason why the Fantastic Four cast wasn't announced at D23, and the X-Men film is a long way away.

Both properties were bought back by Marvel Studios, as X-Men and Fantastic Four were previously under Fox Studios' helm. After Fox was acquired by Disney, Marvel fans rejoiced because they would now be able to see the Avengers on the same screen as the X-Men and the Fantastic Four for the first time in live-action history. However, fans were taken aback once it was revealed earlier that Marvel Studios was in no rush to bring in the X-Men or Fantastic Four. This, however, hasn't stopped Marvel Studios from acquiring the pieces necessary to make their move.

At Disney's D23 Expo, fans were expecting groundbreaking updates on projects such as Blade, Fantastic Four, X-Men, Deadpool 3, and even Spider-Man. However, fans instead were met with trailers for projects that are much closer to release, and aside from Matt Shakman being confirmed as the Fantastic Four director, nothing else about the film was announced. Now, Deadline Senior Reporter Justin Kroll has explained why the cast of Fantastic Four was not announced at D23. "[...] going forward here [are] some ways to temper expectations. Feige for the most part, does not want to make big casting decisions without getting input from his director," Kroll said. "There are exceptions like Mahershala being cast early on for BLADE role but something where it's a team like F4 or X-MEN, Feige would prefer that director input and since Matt only got the job a couple of weeks ago very unlikely any casting decisions were made."

As for why an X-Men film or cast wasn't announced, Kroll made a comment about that as well. "Speaking of X-MEN, this film isn't happening for a very long time, so outside of a writer being tapped, it's super unlikely any casting decisions get made on that one for some time," Kroll explained. Kroll outlines this notion very perfectly, as Marvel Studios rarely reveals its hand, so to speak, in order to tease and excite its passionate group of fans. However, this at times can work against the success of an organization, as sometimes it's better to let people know what they need to know.

Of course, since X-Men is highly anticipated, it runs the risk of over shadowing the introduction of the newer heroes and villains that are set to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Marvel Studios did the right thing by answering the question of an X-Men reboot's existence, so now Marvel Studios is doing right by this by laying down the foundation first and keeping the big reveals a secret until the right time.

Fantastic Four is scheduled to be released in theaters on November 8, 2024.
