Fans have been waiting a long time to get their hands on a new Saints Row game. Was this new entry worth the wait? It seems like most fans and reviewers don’t seem to think so. The reviews across all platforms are around the 60s on Metacritic.

There are a lot of things that need to be done to the game to improve it. These things go beyond glitches as well. Glitches were always present in the series, and they could be charming in some cases. While wonky physics are funny in Saints Row, for example, other bugs are more troubling. Here’s a good list of things the team needs to fix and add to make the reboot better. There is time to turn those 60s around.

7 Customize The HUD

Players have the option to keep the HUD on or to turn the HUD off. Unlike assist options in the game, there are no sliders to mess with. Turning off the HUD removes a lot of useful information that seems odd. The only time it disappears naturally if it is turned on is when players perform a takedown.

For example, the reticle is removed, making it hard to aim. That is not normal for an AAA game to do. It would be nice if players could pick and choose what they wanted to keep or remove between the reticle, map, quest board, and so on.

6 Steal Enemy Weapons

In most shooters, players can pick up weapons that enemies drop off the ground. Call of Duty, for example, allows players to do this. Saints Row technically allows players to do this but only in certain, story situations.

For example, there is an early mission wherein players can pick up a mini-gun during an art show raid. There are other examples like this, but it doesn’t happen enough. If any car can be jacked then why can’t any gun or melee weapon be stolen in Saints Row as well?

5 Add A Better Photo Mode

Players can use their phones in a myriad of ways in the game. They can look at the map, activate missions, check their bank account, and the list goes on. They can even use the phone to take photos in Saints Row, which is a standard function for phones nowadays.

While it’s nice there is some way to take a photo in the game, it is not a real photo mode. The camera is missing many options like filters, so, a true photo mode should be added. Part of the fun in using a photo mode is pausing and manipulating the environment. Wouldn’t it be cool to pause the game mid-explosion to get a sweet screenshot? That is seemingly why photo modes were created for action games like this.

4 Better Cover Fire

Part of the overall problem with Saints Row is its haphazard application of mechanics. The phone being allowed to take photos is one example.

Another example is the lack of a cover system. There is a way to crouch in the game so that players can sneak around or get behind cover, but this is not a good solution as it is difficult to fire at enemies while staying safe. Saints Row is not primarily a cover-based shooter, but if cover is implemented into a game, then it should be at least a sound system.

3 Replay Missions

One of the biggest losses in this sequel is the ability to replay missions. This has been a standard in the series for years. Players can pop open their phones and check what missions they have accomplished, but they cannot be played again.

There are some exceptions to this such as the side hustles. That is a positive but the Saints Row missions fans want to replay the most revolve around the story. Hopefully, this option can be added in sooner rather than later.

2 Add Bikes

Exploring the world in Saints Row

There are tons of cool vehicles to steal in the open-world environments of Saints Row from cars to bikes to more destructive vehicles like a bulldozer. There are some cooler ones toward the end of the game but saying anything more would be a spoiler. A type of vehicle missing from this list is a bicycle.

There are plenty of bikes lying around the world, so it is odd players can’t ride those as well. It was a good transportation device in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, which also had some desert regions in it. The inability to use bikes isn’t a huge loss, but it would be cool if they were added in.

1 The Subtitles

A cutscene featuring characters in Saints Row

There are a ton of technical flaws wrong with Saints Row. This new gang needs another coat of paint to get it up to code. Some of the biggest issues are with the audio; for example, some scenes are missing music tracks, making the story sound off.

One example could have the music drop out of a scene so that all players hear are the sounds of clinking glasses and NPC murmurings at a party. It’s a bit haunting. Subtitles are also an issue that may or may not be due to a glitch. They are always way ahead of the conversations. If that was programmed into the game on purpose then it should be tweaked so that players can follow along better.

Saints Row was released on August 23, 2022 and is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
