FIFA 23 will have crossplay across most modes, but it’s limited to one-on-one activities. This means, Pro Clubs, by its very nature, will not be supported. That’s left the community irate, as many feel it’s the feature that would benefit best from crossplay, due to its 11vs11 requirements. It’s something that publisher EA Sports has addressed, without mentioning anything specific.

“I share your desire to see crossplay in Pro Clubs, and understand the frustrations for not seeing it included in the launch of FIFA 23,” game design director Richard Walz said. “While we’re excited with the first steps to bring new crossplay features to FIFA 23, we also recognise what cross-play functionality could mean to the Pro Clubs mode with the potential for improving matchmaking and allowing friends from different platforms of the same generation to play together.”

While he didn’t explicitly confirm that crossplay will come to Pro Clubs later, he basically admitted that it’s in the pipeline. “With the scale of such an important feature, our goal is to bring you the best possible experiences. As we look at our crossplay future, we’re focused on matchmaking in Pro Clubs, VOLTA, and FUT Co-Op, as well as cross-platform lobby invites and ultimately cross-platform Pro Clubs.”

So, what is new with Pro Clubs this year? Well, firstly, it will be closer associated with street football mode VOLTA, with progression shared across the two. “This year we built features that bring the Pro Clubs and VOLTA experiences closer together, so that regardless of how you and your friends feel like playing on any given day, you’ll be making progress.”

In essence, then, you’ll earn XP for your Pro Clubs character even when you’re playing minigames in VOLTA – and the same applies to the Battle Pass-style Seasonal Event progression, where you’ll unlock new clothing and customisation options regardless of mode. This includes tattoos and more, although some of the sillier VOLTA cosmetics will not be compatible with the more serious Pro Clubs, which is fair enough.

Across both modes, there’ll be more levels to work through – 100 in total – with each level coming quicker and easier. You’ll also find new Perks to refine your playstyle, while Post-Match Accolades will be awarded in Pro Clubs to acknowledge the best players. Over in VOLTA, there’ll be new minigames to enjoy, including a distinctly Fall Guys-esque Dribble King challenge – and, of course, Foot Golf!

Meanwhile, a larger stadium has been added to the VOLTA mix to give you more room to express yourself in matches. And one new Signature Ability, Take Flight, will allow you to rise above your opponents and win more aerial duels.

All in all, it sounds like an iterative update for both modes, but it seems like the plan is to more closely align VOLTA and Pro Clubs moving forwards. We wonder if this is all paving the way for an NBA 2K23-style MyPlayer career in the future – especially with all the improvements being added to the Player Career mode in FIFA 23 as well.
