Riot Games has announced that it will be teaming up with Amazon Web Services (AWS) for esports content and distribution. This will add Riot to the AWS roster and allow Riot to use AWS’ data analytics for esports broadcasts and additional features like esports stats, global pro team rankings, and more.

AWS is one of the world’s largest cloud service providers, but it also provides cloud services AI tech, machine learning, deep learning, and more. Riot will use AWS to build out its services in a way that we may see other esports related organizations follow. In addition to being able to create the first ssports stats during broadcasts, with key data being refreshed consistently, fans will also have an opportunity to vote on which stats they want to see developed first. The results of this vote will be known first during the broadcast of Valorant Champions in September and the League of Legends Worlds later this fall.

Riot will also be generating the AWS Global Power Rankings, with shifting, almost real-time ranks of the top global pro teams for LoL Esports, VCT, and Wild Rift Esports. The data will be displayed on screen during broadcasts so everyone will know where teams stand and can even know quickly if anything changes while watching broadcasts.

This fall will also see a “Pick’em powered by AWS” from this deal, where, according to a release on the new deal,

Esports fans will be able to participate in bracket challenges throughout the competitive season and win prizes for correctly selecting the teams that make it to each championship event. Built on AWS’s machine learning technologies, “Pick’em powered by AWS” will introduce new ways for fans to make team selections based on tournament data and compete for prizes.”

To introduce one or both Power Rankings and Pick’Em, Riot and AWS will host a hackathon event to let teams build systems that could be adapted for each relevant game. Winning platforms will see Riot and AWS co-develop an initial build and eventually build out a final version.
