From Software’s Elden Ring is a big game with many weapons and items to choose from. Some of those may become integral to a powerful Elden Ring build, while others will usually be discarded at the first opportunity. Meanwhile, a few will spend a significant amount of time sitting in the player’s inventory until the exact moment they prove to be a game-changer.

One of these situational items is Elden Ring’s Mimic’s Veil, which allows players to disguise themselves as part of the environment. And while that might not sound too impressive on its own, it can be a powerful way to turn the tables on a PvP opponent. One recent video demonstrates exactly how.

Reddit user TerrariaEnthusiast7 posted a short clip of a PvP encounter in Elden Ring. Having either Invaded or been Summoned to another player’s world, TerrariaEnthusiast7 uses the Mimic’s Veil to disguise themselves as a kneeling statue. After an unknown amount of waiting, the Host player arrives by jumping down from a nearby balcony. They do not notice TerrariaEnthusiast7 while attacking one of Elden Ring's Teardrop Scarab before moving on. However, as they walk past TerrariaEnthusiast7, the latter throws off their disguise and comes out swinging, defeating the Host before they can even react.

According to the original poster, the trap was revenge on a Host whose co-op partners had overwhelmed him in previous encounters. And while there was some grumbling in the comments, it is a clever way to turn the table on powerful opponents. The Mimic’s Veil also works on Elden Ring’s non-player enemies, of course, but requires a bit more cunning to pull off an ambush on a human opponent.

This kind of trap also requires a great deal of patience on the player’s part, with TerrariaEnthusiast7 leaving a comment about how they needed to cut out a significant amount of waiting. Luck also plays a big role, as a few people noted in the comments. The room they were hiding in was big enough that the Host might never have walked past him, assuming he even entered the area at all. Still, assuming that TerrariaEnthusiast7 didn’t stage the video, it demonstrates how powerful the Mimic’s Veil can be in the hands of a clever Elden Ring player.

Players can find the Mimic’s Veil in the Stormveil Castle’s Rampart Tower, not far from where one of Elden Ring’s Grafted Scion boss spawns. The item is in a chest on the second floor, guarded by a Banished Knight. Using the Veil also costs 15 Focus Points and whatever time it takes for players to lure their opponents into position.

Elden Ring is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
