Devolver Digital and Terrible Toybox have released the first gameplay footage from upcoming adventure Return to Monkey Island.

The footage came as part of today’s Nintendo Direct broadcast. In doing so, it also confirmed that the game will be heading to Nintendo Switch as well as PC. Here’s the blurb: “The tangled history of Monkey Island’s most famous secret leads Guybrush Threepwood – intrepid hero, leather jacket salesman, mighty pirate – to embark on a new swash-buckling adventure through the Caribbean, determined to uncover the elusive secret once and for all.”

A new Monkey Island game was first announced back in April. Series creators Ron Gilbert and Dave Grossman have reunited on writing duties, and are teaming up with Rex Crowle. He’s the artist behind Knights & Bikes and Tearaway, and is giving the new entry its latest art style. It’s proven a little controversial with some fans, but Gilbert defended the decision pretty vehemently.

And frankly, we think he was right – you can see the art style in action in the trailer. We’ve got plenty of returning characters, such as Elaine Marley, disembodied skull Murray and of course the Ghost Pirate LeChuck. Even famed businessman Stan is back, albeit imprisoned for marketing related crimes.
