Tencent Teases An Upcoming Open World Unreal Engine 5 MMORPG Announcement

Tencent is teasing the announcement of an open world MMORPG made by its subsidiary Lightspeed Studios and built in Unreal Engine 5.

The teaser video looks to be part of a longer announcement and trailer coming, with a reported date of this coming Monday, June 27th, as announcement day. Teasers of teasers and announcements of announcements aside, Tencent is one of the world’s top gaming companies, and a new MMORPG is something worth considering.

In the teaser video, we see a warrior with a sword in what looks like an ancient land somewhere in Asia, or inspired by Asia. A hawk flies by into the trees, towards the sky as steady light drumming plays alongside sweeping music. The teaser lasts all of 19 seconds, so you’re not getting too much of a hint from the content within, but it does give some idea of what we might be able to expect from the ultimate announcement.

With the announcement coming so soon, it’s a little MMORPG food for thought for over the weekend.

Lightspeed Studios is handling development here. The company was formerly known as Lightspeed & Quantum Studios, and earlier this month, announced the name change and that they were working on what they’re calling the “Lightspeed Universe”. After working to complete and release a number of games, including PUBG Mobile and Apex Legends Mobile, their released titles see about 400 million active monthly players, according to the Lightspeed Universe announcement.

While much of Lightspeed’s portfolio is in mobile games, they do have an ambitious rebranding underway that sounds a lot like some of these other “metaverse” announcements we’ve been seeing for a while now. They describe their “universe” as “an ecosystem that connects players and developers around the world” as their brand vision.

Where this leaves the soon to come MMORPG announcement isn’t clear, but let the speculation begin on what it might all mean until we have that full info.
