Yu Suzuki, most famously the creator of Shenmue, has a new game coming to Apple Arcade this month, on June 24th.

The game is Air Twister, a fantasy-themed endless shooter, which feels like something of a departure. The developer is Ys Net, the studio behind 2019’s Shenmue III.

Check out the reveal trailer below:

As you can see, it looks quite, quite mad. There are people flying on giant swans. There are floating rock islands. And there appear to be laser weapons. Also, around twenty-five second into the trailer, we get a very jaunty upbeat song. Which made me laugh, as it didn’t quite fit what was happening.

Regardless, the game seems to be a kind of riff on Space Harrier, which makes sense given Suzuki’s Sega history. Plus, all that swan-riding reminds me a bit of Panzer Dragoon—another Sega classic.

The game’s App Store description reads:

“Soar through the sky in this all-new fantasy endless shooter from legendary game creator Yu Suzuki. Players will assume the role of Princess Arch fighting back against bizarre invaders to save their planet from destruction.”

In an interview with Axios, Suzuki described his talks with Apple. “When I went to the Apple headquarters, we had a talk,” he said. “What if I was to do a really straight-forward game you want to play over and over again, like old-school arcades.”
