FIFA 22 looks to be receiving a feature that fans have been crying out for in recent years: crossplay. FIFA 22 is the latest iteration of the popular soccer game, which to fan dismay, did not come with crossplay, however, that looks to be changing.

FIFA 22 is the 31st mainline iteration of the soccer franchise, with the FIFA series itself being one of the most popular in gaming. Although sports games can often be the target for criticism, that does not prevent titles like FIFA from selling extremely well year upon year.

After years of players requesting the addition of crossplay, EA has finally given in, confirming crossplay for FIFA 23 earlier this year. However, the latest news from EA has revealed that crossplay is also coming to the current entry, FIFA 22. On May 2nd, the FIFA Direct Communication Twitter page revealed that crossplay testing in FIFA 22 would commence "in the near future." The crossplay test will involve Online Seasons and Online Friendlies modes. The feature will have to be manually enabled by players, doing so will be easy, players will simply have to open a widget on the main menu and switch on crossplay.

The announcement that crossplay will be tested in the current entry of FIFA before the release of FIFA 23 this Autumn will please players. This suggests that EA will work out any and all bugs during its time in FIFA 22 in preparation for the upcoming FIFA 23. For a series that has stagnated as the years have gone by, crossplay will offer the FIFA franchise a much-needed face lift.

The addition of crossplay will help EA ingratiate itself with a player base that has grown increasingly disillusioned with a series that offers little innovation year after year, although there is still plenty that EA could improve upon. One of the aspects of the games aching for improvement is the Career Mode.

While the addition of crossplay is a step in the right direction for the soccer titles, some may argue it's not the most important step to be taking right now. As previously mentioned, there are other issues plaguing the recent FIFA entries, such as what can feel like minuscule gameplay changes across entries and a neglect games modes other than FUT. On the other hand, although it may not have been the biggest priority for some players in the list of things that needed improving, this is nothing short of a win for players and hopefully a sign of things to come.

FIFA 22 is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.
