Final Fantasy 14's 6.1 patch added a lot of new content, and one major piece is the Crystalline Conflict PVP Mode. PVP in Final Fantasy 14 has never been that popular, with only spikes of popularity being from Moogle Tomestone Events. After the new patch, however, the Wolves Den is suddenly packed with players.

Crystalline Conflict is a new PVP mode in that has attracted many players for its addicting gameplay and also for the fact that the battles are very fast-paced. There are casual and ranked matches and plenty of rewards available via Trophy Crystals and Framer Kits. However, there is plenty of strategy to the Crystalline Conflict mode as well. While it may seem simple, there is a lot to learn.

The Basics Of Strategy

PVP Map.

While the Crystalline Conflict is PVP, the goal should never be just wailing on other players. The goal is about moving the crystal and the players that forget this are bound to lose. Players should always either be pushing the crystal or working to make an opportunity for their teammates to push it. Some teams will try to distract other players from the crystal, and that's a winning strategy if players take the bait.

No matter what job a player has, they have the abilities Guard, Purify, and Recuperate. These are very important and are key to surviving longer. Recuperate heals the player by 15,000 HP up to four times when they are at full MP. Of all the PVP abilities, it will likely be used the most. Purify is basically Esuna, and should be used when piled with status afflictions. Guard is also very important and is best used when out of Recuperate heals and under the crystal. It negates 90 percent of the damage thrown at the player and clever players often use it as a strategy to stall enemies trying to push the crystal.

The Importance Of Teamwork

Players fighting each other over the crystal.

There is a limit to how one can interact with their team in the Crystalline Conflict, as Square Enix created a Quick Chat feature to avoid players being toxic to each other. While it is limited, though, the Quick Chat is very useful. Particularly useful options are related to tactics such as "Push the crystal" and "Fall back and regroup." This can put a divided team back onto the same page.

In fact, falling back and regrouping is of utmost importance since there is survival in numbers. One player cannot beat three. So if an entire team dies and has not yet gotten back up, it can be a good idea to wait for them and charge the enemy together. Another strategy for a lone player is to pop the Guard ability under the crystal to buy their team a little time to catch up.

Another way to promote teamwork is to give enemies numbered icons. These can be accessed in the Signs menu. This strategy gives players an order of priority as to which enemies to target while fighting for the crystal. Usually, the best enemies to mark with high priority are healers and whoever is the biggest threat.

Tactics Specific To Jobs And Limit Break

What jobs are on the player team versus the enemy team can change how people approach strategy. For example, melee DPS like Dragoons and Samurai are better for dealing as much damage as possible on the frontlines while ranged melee jobs like Bards and Machinists are best as supports. If a team has healers, they are best to target first so that the enemy team cannot heal as quickly from attacks.

Last but not least, Limit Breaks should always be used. Every player has their own Limit Break, and it can refill fast enough that it is worth using not long after it is ready. The Limit Breaks are different depending on the job, though, so it is good to understand what the player job's limit break specifically does so that it can be strategically used.
