RPS@PAX 2022: We tour Larian's Baldur's Gate 3 booth, and chat about its 2023 release date

Our minds are flayed at the majesty of this walled city

Of all the booths at PAX East 2022 this year, Larian's Baldur's Gate 3 stand was by far one of the most impressive. Not only did they construct an entire walled city to hark back to its iconic, titular location, but they also had an enormous Nautiloid crashed into the top of it. There was a Mindflayer statue on hand as well, for fans to pose with next to their official cosplayers, and a little campfire for attendees to have a small sit down on, just like they'd do when resting in the game. It was such an incredible booth that we asked Larian to give us a tour of it, and while we did so we also took the opportunity to chat a bit about the reception of Update 7, the confirmation of its 2023 release date and more.

It's difficult to appreciate the scale of the Larian booth from down on the ground, but as you may have seen from our daily round-up video yesterday, we got the chance to go up to the convention centre catwalk in the afternoon and view the entire floor from the rafters. From above - as you can see in the header image up the top there - Larian's stand is really quite impressive, housing rows of PCs inside the city while other attendees queued up outside. You can also see the entirity of the Nautiloid, which drapes its long tentacles right into the main demo area. Meanwhile, that red tent on the corner is their merch booth.

As for our chat with Kieron Kelly, who's a product manager for Baldur's Gate III, we chatted about how they went about constructing such an elaborate booth, as well as how the game's progressing more generally. The demo on the show floor was still showcasing Patch 7, which is the current one available in early access, but in the spirit of their D&D Direct segment the other day, we talked about the game's journey so far, whether it's where they expected it to be by now and whether players had discovered any more surprises in the latest update after Patch 6 introduced weaponised salami.

Larian aren't the only ones with an impressive PAX East stand this year. We're still working on a big run-down of our favourite booths from the show, but you can get a glimpse of some of the others by checking out our best and most cursed things we saw on day one. You can also find the rest of our PAX East coverage over on the RPS@PAX tag, which is continually getting stuffed with more and more videos and articles as the show rolls on. There's more to come next week, too, so make sure you keep an eye out for those as well.
