Almost seven years since it was released, CD Projekt Red’s The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is still managing to impress gamers with its visual fidelity and crisp gameplay. In a recent video by YouTube channel VG Tech, the channel compares how The Witcher 3 runs in performance mode on the Xbox One X and how it compares to the Xbox Series X running the game, also in performance mode. The results are impressive.

The Witcher 3 was released in May 2015, and, at the time, it was one of the most visually stunning games on eighth-generation consoles. Many fans still consider it to be one of the best-looking games even in 2022. Since 2015, The Witcher 3 has sold 40 million copies making it one of the most successful games in CD Projekt Red’s portfolio. Visually intense games like The Witcher, along with the advent of 4K televisions, pushed Microsoft to create a mid-generation refresh of their Xbox One console in the form of the Xbox One X, a powerful machine capable of higher frame rates at higher resolutions. Despite being over four years old, the Xbox One X still performs well, and VG Tech's recent benchmarks put the console in a positive light.

With both versions of The Witcher 3 running on patch 4.1.2.10, VG Tech pits the Xbox One X against the Xbox Series X, benchmarking both consoles using the game’s performance mode. The Xbox One X performs admirably, holding a locked 60 frames per second in multiple action sequences while more performance-intensive scenes dip to the low 40s. The Xbox One X version's dynamic resolution scaling ranges from 2650x1490 at the highest end to 1920x1080 at the lowest end. Meanwhile, the Xbox Series X in backward compatibility mode holds a locked 60 frames per second, with its highest resolution peaking at 3456x1944 and lowest at 2400x1350. VG Tech also notes that texture filtering is improved on Xbox Series X.

While still standing tall as one of the most visually impressive games across all systems, The Witcher 3 is receiving a net-gen patch. CD Projekt Red has yet to provide details about the graphical enhancements coming to its critically acclaimed RPG; however, many fans speculate that The Witcher 3 could likely be receiving ray-tracing and performance uplifts at higher resolutions. VG Tech’s performance comparison video proves that The Witcher 3 still looks great and runs well depending on which console fans decide to play the game on. Many fans may wonder what is in store for the next-generation version of The Witcher 3 if current consoles can already run the game well.

The incoming next-gen patch for The Witcher 3 has been delayed with no time frame regarding its release. In the wake of that news, some Witcher fans in possession of an Xbox Series X may want to replay the game on the newer console. The Xbox Series X is a powerful machine that can effortlessly deliver 60 frames per second on The Witcher 3 at higher resolutions. Ray-tracing may be one of the most forward-thinking graphical technologies right now, but many gamers still prioritize framerate and resolution above all else. Depending on the contents of The Witcher 3’s next-gen patch, some gamers may find it redundant if one of the main changes is an increase in resolution and frame rate. The Xbox Series X and even Xbox One X have proven themselves as capable machines that can already deliver that great experience.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.
