It has been some time since fans last received info about the PvE content in Overwatch 2. While the mode seems to be ambitious, featuring skill trees, numerous enemy types, and hundreds of Hero missions, gamers have been left to speculate about it due to a lack of footage in recent months. With the Overwatch 2 PvP beta right around the corner, the focus will likely stay on multiplayer for the foreseeable future.

Whenever the PvE campaign of Overwatch 2 resurfaces, it would be great to see some deep dives into the aforementioned mechanics. However, while Blizzard should focus on highlighting things like skill trees and the new Omnics players will be fighting, it would be great to see some new features discussed as well. One unconfirmed feature that has serious potential is a hub area, and hopefully Overwatch 2 delivers a memorable place for gamers to rest between missions.

The Benefits of a Hub Area in Overwatch 2

Currently, there is nothing to suggest that there will be a hub area in Overwatch 2, but it is hard to deny that it would perfectly suit the game. Between each Overwatch 2 mission, players could return to the new Overwatch headquarters, selecting the next objective from a war table like in Marvel’s Avengers. For those that want to take a break from the action, this hub could provide a lot of entertainment.

It only takes one look at Overwatch’s map easter eggs to imagine how enjoyable a hub area made by Blizzard would be, as it could feature several small activities for players to use as a distraction. Alongside returning activities like the karaoke mic, players could head to a library area to read all the Overwatch comics and short stories released thus far. Further, a theater area could allow players to watch all of Overwatch’s memorable animated shorts together.

A hub area could provide a changing room, allowing gamers to swap out their hero’s default attire with one of Overwatch’s many memorable skins. Needing to go to the main menu to set a character’s attire could be tedious, while doing it through a pause menu would be uninspired. A changing room is the perfect way to approach outfit swaps in the campaign, as it would further build upon the idea that the hub area is a home for the members of Overwatch.

Perhaps the best thing a hub area could do is allow players to interact with the heroes of Overwatch. If someone is not controlling Tracer, having her hang out in a part of the hub area would be a great touch, as players could talk to her between missions. Characters could comment on their own lore or the major story beats of Overwatch 2’s campaign, giving players a reason to regularly communicate with them. As the campaign progresses and gamers meet up with more heroes, they could be added to the hub area, making it feel livelier while simultaneously reflecting the idea that the team is slowly coming back together.

From petting Brigitte’s cat to competing against Hanzo or Cassidy to get the top score in a shooting range, there are tons of things that Blizzard could add to a hub area. While it remains to be seen if it will actually happen, it would add a lot of personality to the game’s PvE content. Though it is absolutely not necessary for the co-op mode to be good, it is a feature that would make the downtime between PvE missions a lot more enjoyable.

Overwatch 2 is currently in development for PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
