The Ascent stormed onto PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 last month, and we rather liked it in our 7/10 review. Playing alone, the cyberpunk shooter can be a blast if you're into its grimy world and upgrade-driven action, but it's perhaps best enjoyed with a friend or two. As we've come to expect of co-op enabled, cross-gen titles, cross-play is possible between the two PlayStation consoles — but a new hotfix actually removes PS5-PS4 cross-play from the game.
As developer Neon Giant explains, cross-play between PS5 and PS4 was somehow activated unintentionally, and apparently needs more testing "to ensure the best experience for all players". Weird, but at least we've been given a reason!
What's more, this hotfix caps the The Ascent's frame rate at 30 on PS4 in order to "maintain consistent performance".

When cross-playing(?), with the faster loads on ps5s, does that mean those people are left wandering and waiting, while the ps4 players load?
I’m pretty sure there’s been no cross gen co-op since launch? I tried to play it last week with my brother and it didn’t work.
@PhhhCough That happens kinda with Avengers, if you play with PS4 players you're stuck with PS4 load times.
@PhhhCough basically yes... at least, that's what happened when I played back 4 blood with friends; they'd load into the game but be half unable to do much until I had also loaded in, and then shops etc would open
Two players has worked fine, but more than that and the game refuses to load any assets most of the time.
@PhhhCough the ps5's initial load time is long..well long for the ps5 anyway..its no valhalla but its still quite jarring when you are used to super quick loads..ironically i looked at some ps4 youtube vids to compare and the ps4 actually looked a tad faster..no doubt somebodys going to tell me i'm wrong..

Odd, doesnt this game have cross play between xbox one, xbox series, and PC?. Why is the PS cross play an issue?
Does anyone else think framerate caps need to be done away with as mandatory? Let us turn them off. We’d have so many PS4 games that had a cap updated in them where if it was optional we’d be playing them at 60FPS.
Also, just let it remain with a warning then. I don’t believe it was an actual accident and this update sounds horrible all around.

It depends on the game. A stable framerate with good frame pacing is better than a framerate that is all over the place.
If the game can hold 57-60 fps without deviating, it should be unlocked.
If it’s like AC: Unity at its release, it should be capped. That game never got close to hitting 60 on PS4 hardware and more significantly it was completely all over the place. One second the FPS was in the 45-50 FPS range. Next second it was crawling at 24-27 FPS. Then a solid 30 for a minute. Then skyrocketing back to 50 only to drop down to 20.
@TheRedComet @Jaz007 An easy fix for this would be to have an option toggle that's set to locked 30fps by default, but also allows for locked 60fps, locked 120fps, and unlocked. It would give the player the choice of what kind of experience they want, and future proof the game for better hardware. (You could just have 30, 60, and unlocked I guess).
If I remember correctly, Bioshock on the PS3 had a frame rate option, and that game is like 15 years old at this point. It's kinda weird it's not more common today.
